What happens the first week of September each year on Marco Island? Sept. 1 marks the start of another wonderful year for the Marco Island Civic Association (MICA) and the Marco Island Residents’ Beach.
MICA membership is just $35, and with that membership you will vote to elect board members to represent you. MICA’s Members Only discount program is larger than ever and offers you 10 percent off at many of your favorite restaurants and shops on Marco Island.
In addition to the many fine businesses that have supported the discount program over the past decade, new businesses include Around Again Furniture & Décor, Carriage Limousine, Cedar Bay Yacht Club, Diva Boutique, LeeBee Fish Co., Nacho Mama’s and Vic’s Island Pizza.
Some of these businesses are brand-spanking new to Marco, such as Around Again Furniture & Décor, which will feature nearly new furniture from model homes, antiques and decorative items; and Carriage Limousine, offering affordable, prompt and professional transportation service.
Many of us can attest to the taste of the Philly/Jersey style pizza, cheese steaks and hoagies (aka subs) at Vic’s Island Pizza, but did you know that they also bake Marco’s only wheat pizza? Now, pizza is even healthier!
Still hungry? How about Nacho Mama’s, serving Tex-Mex American, in Marco Walk? Nacho Mama’s has two happy hours per day, from 3 to 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. to midnight. They feature entertainment three nights per week: Ladies Night on Thursdays, with a DJ and reduced drink prices, and a solo guitarist on Fridays and Saturdays. At Nacho’s, you can order a lunch special until November for $5.99!
Of course, we have food for all tastes on the MICA discount program. The LeeBee Fish Co. features fresh seafood from our local waters and will also cook to order any item for carry out. It doesn’t get easier than that.
Pamela Broad is the proprietor of the Diva Boutique in Marco Walk, and she’s offering 10 percent off facials and the purchase of skin care or makeup.
There’s something for everyone on MICA’s discount program including boaters in need of repairs, with the addition of Cedar Bay Yacht Club, who is offering free haul out and wash with all service work and 10 percent off parts and labor.
In this economy, we can all use a little break, and our Marco business owners need you. Please keep all of our proprietors in mind. If you are a business owner who would like to join the program, give us a call. The MICA discount program is growing daily, so contact the MICA office for a complete list.
One of the best bargains on the island, of course, is the Residents’ Beach membership! I could go into great detail about all the tremendous aspects of the Residents’ Beach membership, but since I seem to be running out of room, it will have to wait until next week. But let me just ask this — what can you get for just $10.83 per month? For improved property owners and annual renters, Residents’ Beach membership is $130 for an entire year, Sept. 1 through Aug. 31. Those who rent for one month or longer are also eligible to join for the time they are renting on Marco Island.
As we have the last several years, the Residents’ Beach will offer special entertainment events. While we’re still working on scheduling, members will want to keep these dates in mind: Dec. 20, 2009 — Holiday Celebration with the Shindigs; Feb. 13, 2010 — Mixed Nuts; and March 14, 2010 — Gary & Keri, opening for Fakahatchee Band. We are looking forward to featuring local bands and wonderful musicians and entertainers this season.
