The NFL begins its season on Thursday when Tennessee travels to Pittsburgh.

And what is on three of our swamis’ minds: How to beat out Dave Rice as King of the Swamis.

Although Dottie Weiner will have to be queen.

Weiner rallied to nearly catch Rice in the final weeks, but fell one point short last season. In the nine years of predicting games Rice has won five titles and shared one with Don Healy. Healy won the title outright and former swami, Dave Kocourek, won once.

Weiner has been the bridesmaid a couple of times, while not ever wearing the crown.

Two years ago she was the top swami for 13 straight weeks, only to fall to Rice in the last week.

Roger Raymond joined the swamis two years ago to find out how tough it is to select winners. He rallied at the end last year only to finish fourth, one point behind Healy.

None of the swamis earned bragging rights for choosing the Super Bowl XLII winner. None of them even chose the finalists, the Phoenix Cardinals and the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Steelers won, 27-23.

None take Pittsburgh to repeat.

Healy says Pittsburgh will win the AFC Championship and meet NFC champ Phiadelphia.

“The Eagles win the super Bowl,” he predicts. “That being said I sincerely hope not.”

Rice says Tennessee topples Pittsburgh in the AFC Championship game. He predicts them to play Minnesota, who tops the New York Giants for the NFC Championship. His Super Bowl winner: Minnesota.

Weiner says Tennessee knocks off Baltimore for the AFC title. Dallas downs Chicago for the NFC title. In the Super Bowl, Dallas downs Tennessee.

Raymond takes San Diego to win the AFC and Philadelphia in the NFC. He selects San Diego to win it all.

The regular season opens on Thursday, with Tennessee traveling to Pittsburgh for an 8:30 p.m. game, which can be heard on SIRUS.

Weiner says, “(Ben) Roethlisberger and the Steelers will win the game over (Kerry) Collins and Tennessee, although I do have the Titans ending up in the playoffs.”

Rice already disagrees with Dottie, taking Pittsburgh over Tennessee.

Raymond and Healy agree with Rice.

Our swamis begin a full schedule of predictions in the Eagle on Sunday. They will predict winners of weekly games every Sunday this season.

How much better can it get than sipping coffee, tea, or another refreshment, in the morning and seeing what our Swamis have to say about the day’s games?
