— Abortion opponents want to put a proposal on next year's Florida ballot that would give human rights to embryos.

The Virgina-based American Life League on Friday is announcing a petition drive for the proposed "Personhood Amendment" to the Florida Constitution.

It would define a "person" as being in existence from "the beginning of the biological development."

Florida is one of several states being targeted by the Roman Catholic group.

Voters in Colorado rejected a similar proposal last year but another attempt is being made to get back on the ballot there next year. Efforts to get on the ballot failed in Georgia and Oregon last year. North Dakota lawmakers this year rejected a personhood bill.
