The only racket being raised at the Greater Marco Family YMCA is that of tennis players on the eight clay courts there. The Y’s Tennis Director, Connie Kormanyos has been at the facility for more than 20 years and is responsible for the success of the program as it is today.

The Youth Tennis program starts with the 4-to-5-year-olds in Tiny Tot Tennis. Boys and girls start learning the basics of the sport, such as movement drills, and lead up to activities for introducing tennis. The next program session starts on September 14 and is scheduled from 3:30 to 4 p.m., Mondays and Wednesdays.

Little Slam Tennis is the next level for 6-to-8-year-olds. The basic skills of tennis are taught and modified games will be used for practice. This program is scheduled from 4:30 to 5 p.m., Mondays and Wednesdays, starting September 14.

The tennis student will then join the Slam Junior program, where fundamentals of serve, forehand and backhand will be stressed. Short-court tennis will be played and full-court tennis will be introduced. This program is scheduled from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays, starting September 15.

The advanced program for tennis students is Mighty Slam Junior Tennis. Players signing up for this program should be very experienced and be ready to play in tournaments. Basic fundamentals are stressed, as well as singles strategy. This advanced class will meet from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., starting September 15.

Rates for all sessions are $50 for Y members and $65 for community members, while children in the ASPIRE after school program can attend for $40 a session.
