When looking to add a little Spanish flavor to your cocktail the Pub at La Casita has a golden margarita that’s been served on the Island since 1982.
Bartender Marianne “Mimi” Downey doesn’t claim it as her own, but has adopted it after tending bar at the restaurant for the last six months.
“It’s our house recipe,” Downey said.
She starts with a traditional margarita and tops it with Grand Marnier.
Downey, 46, moved to Marco Island 18 years ago from New Jersey and has been tending bar for 15 years.
Along the way, she’s come up with her own specialty drink she, at first, jokes is called “The Stupid” but laughs that it’s actually called a loco cosmopolitan.
She takes orange vodka, adds one part club soda and a splash of cranberry juice, tops it with an orange slice.
“It’s the ‘loco cosmopolitan’ because it makes you a little loco — a little happy,” Downey said.
The Pub at La Casita serves a variety of food with its drinks, including Mexican fare for breakfast, lunch and dinner next door at La Casita. After more than a decade tending bar, Downey feels like she’s found her home at the Pub.
“I love the people and getting to know all different kinds of people,” she said. “I just enjoy being where I’m at. I enjoy the people. I enjoy life.”
Most days patrons will find Downey behind the bar of the Pub at La Casita serving breakfast and drinks to customers Wednesday through Sunday.
“I love serving breakfast. I’m an early morning person,” said Downey who helps out in the restaurant.
During the entire month of September the restaurant and pub will serve happy hour all day every day, which consists of $2.99 well drinks and $.99 drafts.
