It is easy for David Johnson to smile when he talks about his Marco Island Charter Middle School varsity volleyball team.
“We have a lot of talent and a lot of spunk,” says Johnson of his team.
In the past Johnson would have one or two weak spots that teams could attack, but not this year
“I credit the Naples Juniors volleyball program for the development of Cassidy Penzo, Sierra Rose and Adrienne Collins,” Johnson said. “They are totally different players this season. My eighth graders are way above par.”
Penzo and Samantha Howard are the power servers, while big hitters on the court are Frankie Archaki and Claudine Bolsen. “Claudine wasn’t as dominating as she is this year,” Johnson said.
They are 2-1 on the season, losing only to perennial powerhouse Naples Christian Academy.
“I’ve been trying to beat that coach for five years,” Johnson said. In the last match the team almost did.
They lost two out of three games, losing 25-23, then 28-26. The Lady Eagles won the third game, 15-10, as both teams used seventh graders.
“I take the blame for the loss,” Johnson said. “I tried changing up the lineup, trying to work something different. It was a bad mistake and I got the girls confused.”
Both games were extremely tight. In the second game the lead changed hands often.
“I think we can beat them,” Johnson said. “I think NCA and Marco are two of the better teams in the county.”
Victories over Seacrest and Community School gave Johnson opportunities to play all varsity members. His goal is to play as many players as possible every match.
“The seventh graders are learning and they are great athletes,” Johnson said. “I want to make sure that my team plays fundamentally sound volleyball. I want them to be ready to play when they go off to high school.”
Former Charter School players pepper the Lely junior varsity and varsity lineups.
The Eagles team captain is Brianna Anguilano. Annie Rosenblum is the setter and Amanda Marinaro is another eighth grader who plays well. Rounding out the team are seventh graders Christy Thorstenson, Alyssa Johnson, Erin Homuth, Lexie Lundquist, Ashley Schneller, Jessie Andrade and Shyan Surber.
