Whether you’re really hungry for some pure barbecue or you need to feed an army, Almost Famous Mel’s on Marco Island has combo platters that let you sample the smokehouse meat menu.
With three to choose from, they range in price from $29.99 to $99.99 and follow strict barbecuing guidelines.
When owner Mel Slawik decided to open the joint, he visited and tasted barbecue at close to 100 different places. “Then we came back and just cooked,” Slawik said.
The restaurant uses a smoker that they do ribs, pork, chicken, wings and other items on, before finishing them off on a wood-burning grill.
The Hogg Platter for $29.99 includes a choice of two, with the option to add any for $10.95 each of Mel’s Red Hot half chicken, rack of baby back ribs, St. Louis spare ribs, Texas brisket, pulled pork or shrimp.
For $32.99, the Got Smoked Platter includes a rack of baby backs, beef brisket and pulled pork.
The Family Feast costs just under $100 and can feed four to six people. It includes a whole Mel’s Red Hot chicken, two full racks of baby back ribs, nine bones of spare ribs, burnt ends (crispy burnt brisket ends and ham), six barbecue shrimp, Texas brisket, pulled pork, smoked sausage sandwich, mixed greens, baked beans, onion strings, coleslaw and French fries.
“It is a family feast. It’s a sampling of our ribs, our chicken, our pulled pork, our smoked and grilled shrimp and a lot of our sides. And it feeds the family. People take a lot of food home with them,” Slawik said.
The owner also said the baby backs are a domestic rib that’s every bit of 17 inches long and the side items are homemade, including the southern style beans.
“Just the down home favorites,” Slawik said. “We do a lot of creative barbecuing and our product speaks for itself.”
