MARCO ISLAND — A child suffered a dog bite at Mackle Park during a track meet late Saturday morning. Marco Island police officers responded to the reported injury to help the young boy, but so far have been unsuccessful in locating the dog or its owners.

The Marco Island Charter Middle School student reported running along the path near the back of Mackle Park behind 406 Worthington Street at about 9 a.m. when a man and a woman walked by with a German Shepherd on a leash. As the boy ran past, the dog lunged at him and bit him on the right hip. He reported that the dog owners asked if he was OK and he said he was, wrote Marco Island police officer Jim Hassig in the follow-up report. When he told his mother about what happened they noticed the bite had broken the skin.

“The wound did not appear to be deep, but definitely broke the skin,” Hassig reported. The boy’s mother was encouraged to take her son to be treated by a doctor. The couple who owned the dog was described as being in their 30s, but neither the dog involved or its owners have been identified.
