Wildlife officers net Immokalee man charged with illegally fishing in canal

A 34-year-old Immokalee man was arrested Monday after officers from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission say they caught him using a cast net to illegally catch fish in a canal.

Fredy Jimenez, of the 5000 block of Oakhaven Circle, was charged with taking freshwater game fish by an illegal method, which is a misdemeanor.

Around 8:30 p.m., an FWC officer patrolling on Lake Trafford Road saw two men standing on the edge of a canal, according to an arrest report. One of the men, later identified as Jimenez, was holding a wet cast net. The other was standing next to a white bucket, which a fish jumped out of.

The officer discovered several black crappies and a large tilapia inside the bucket, reports said. Jimenez, who didn’t have any identification other than his employer ID card, also had two crappies in his net.
