Local tennis: Three men's teams win first-place USTA honors

— A trip to Daytona Beach was one sweet ride for three local men’s tennis teams.

After finishing with a 7-1 record in Collier County action, the Players Club & Spa at Lely Resort's USTA 3.0 Men's Super Senior squad represented Naples in the USTA Sectional at Daytona this past weekend. While more than 400 players of various skill levels competed from all over Florida, the Naples USTA 3.0 team swept all of its Men’s Super Senior Doubles matches to become USTA Florida Sectional champion.

The Naples USTA 3.0 Men's Super Senior doubles team at Daytona was captained by Jim Moore. The final win was over Gainesville/Lake City.

The Naples 4.0 men, captained by John Suter, won top honors over Pensacola. The men’s 4.5 Naples-based team also won first-place honors. That squad was captained by George Morton and it beat teams located in Jacksonville and St. Pete/Clearwater in a double-round robin format over three days.

The section champs now will represent Florida in the USTA nationals in April of 2011. The site is to be determined.

Jacksonville edged defending champion Naples, captained by Linda Larkin, in the Women's 4.0 division.

Turville tops: While local junior standouts Gordon Watson and Bjorn Fratangelo were winning boys Easter Bowl titles last week in Palm Springs, Calif., Naples resident Larry Turville was also in Palm Springs, winning the National Men’s 60 Hard Courts at Mission Hills Country Club.

Turville defeated No. 1 seed Brian Cheney in the finals 6-1, 6-2. After a trip to Germany in May to play for a German club team in Pforzheim, Turville will be headed to Sylva, N.C. to work at the Balsam Mountain Reserve for the summer.

City tourney nears: With just one week remaining before play begins, staffers at the Arthur Allen Tennis Center at Cambier Park continue to feverishly accept registrations for the 41st annual City of Naples Tennis Championships. The action runs throughout May.

Friday is the entry deadline for adults. The Junior section of this year’s tournament will be played the first weekend of May. The entry deadline for the junior divisions is Monday.

The tradition of this event and the convenient set-up-your-own-match format draw extraordinary numbers of participants. Past numbers have exceeded 600 entries of various types.

The Players Party will be on the evening of May 20. There also will be a month-long silent auction going on to benefit youth

Call the pro shop at 213-3060 or go to www.allentenniscenter.com to sign up to play.

One more time: Naples Grande’s last tennis event for the season will be Thursday, April 29, from 8:30 to 11 a.m., with lunch to be served afterward. The PBI professionals at the Grande are inviting players from the Naples Grande Tennis Club and from the local community to play in a round-robin mix-up with the PBI pros Jacob Hansen, Mike Manzella, Alex Millet and Fabio Vasconcellos. The cost per player is $20, which includes lunch and prizes. For reservations, phone 594-6033 or e-mail fabio.vasconcellos@hilton.com.

Good cause served: The Lee Memorial Health System Foundation recently announced that more than $165,000 was raised at the Bonita Bay Celebrity Tennis Tournament. Proceeds from the event will benefit Barbara's Friends, an organization that raises funds for The Children's Hospital Cancer Unit. Barbara Haskell, who lost her life at the age of 32 to breast cancer, is

the inspiration for Barbara's Friends. After her passing, her parents, Betty and Frank Haskell, helped make her wish to help children come true by establishing Barbara's Friends.

The event featured 18 former tennis professionals who competed in a Pro Challenge narrated by noted network tennis analyst Mary Carillo of Naples.

Browne honored: Doug Browne of Marco Island is the Collier Division Pro of the Year, named by the United States Professional Tennis Association. Browne will be honored at the USPTA Florida Division Convention luncheon June 5 in Key Largo. It marks the second time in four years that Browne has won the award.
