CHALMETTE, La. — Chubby Checker's celebration of the 50th anniversary of his hit song "The Twist" continues Aug. 14 in Chalmette.
The concert featuring Chubby Checker and the Wild Cats is a benefit for a project to illuminate the Port of St. Bernard (Kaiser) tower as a colorful beacon.
Checker — born Ernest Evans — recorded the song in June 1959, and had turned it into a hit by August 1960, according to the biography on his website, www.chubbychecker.com.
He's been performing 50th anniversary concerts at least since October 2009, and gave a free one on July 7 in Philadelphia, where he grew up.
Checker's website says "The Twist" is the only song ever to hit No. 1 twice. The second time was in January 1962.
