Goin’ crazy — Birthday bash attracts Marco Islanders looking for a good time

Wings were flapping and flying Saturday at Crazy Flamingo, when customers and contestants turned out for its 21st anniversary party and wing eating contests.

Attendees were treated to a bounce house, dunk tank, homemade kettle corn, and enjoyed special prices on beer, hot dogs and hamburgers. The party was a “thank you” to the locals for their support over the years. It also gives the Crazy Flamingo staff a chance to hang out with customers, something that is next to impossible during the busy season.

“Our restaurant could not have survived for 21 years without our local customers,” said Rose Kriberscheck, manager. “The reason we have this party in the summer is to spend quality time with our local customers.”

“We want to thank the people for coming, we could not be here without the locals,” said Danny Dawber, manager.

The Crazy Flamingo held its annual wing eating contests on Saturday too. Vince D’Allura ate 20 hot wings faster than anyone else to win the Hot Wing Eating Contest.

Saul Gutierrez, an employee of Eli Contracting, ate 12 bald eagle hot wings faster than anyone else to win the Bald Eagle Wing Eating Contest.

Though this day was a celebration of the Crazy Flamingo — known to locals as “Crazys” or “The Bird” — being open for 21 years, staff and attendees also thought about the man, Tony Rainone, who made all this possible. Rainone, who opened the Crazy Flamingo Aug. 1, 1989, passed away Sept. 18, 2008. He liked to see everyone happy and his influence is still obvious every time you walk into “Crazys” — everyone is happy and having a great time.

Pat Collins won $200 in the 50/50 raffle drawing and in true Marco Island fashion donated it back. In another act of Marco Island charity, Gregory and Lorrie Smith owners of Eli Contracting donated $100, only if one of their supervisors Tom Riechart spent some time in the dunk tank; he happily obliged. The money raised from the 50/50 drawing and the Smiths’ donation will be donated to Tommie Barfield Elementary.
