Local children in need get new shoes

Three hundred local kids in need will start school in two weeks with new shoes.

“For them it’s really exciting to leave the store with a brand new shoe that they selected,” said Terrie Aviles, client services director for the Guadalupe Center of Immokalee.

Local non-profit Guadalupe Center of Immokalee provides shoes for kids whose families cannot afford to purchase them through an annual back-to-school shoe program. On Monday, 50 kids ranging in age from 5 to 14 traveled from Immokalee to Snyderman’s Shoes, 4910 U.S. 41 N., in Naples to get fitted for their shoes.

“They look good, and they feel good,” said Alex Soriano, 8, of Immokalee.

Snyderman¹s Shoes provides shoes at cost or less and they are purchased with community donations.

“If you sit there and see a young kid walk in, sit on the bench and put the shoes on and then see the smile, you know just for a split moment we’ve made a little difference,” said Jim Joyce, owner of Snyderman¹s Shoes.
