Warren Buffett and Bill Gates are two well known avid bridge players, who enjoy playing and expanding the game of bridge into new fields. They sponsor junior bridge and work through the ACBL and the World Bridge School to promote the game.
Gates is involved with Bridge Base on Line and Warren Buffett has instituted a Bridge Tournament for the Buffett Cup. This tournament is every two years, the same as the Ryder Cup Golf Tournament and usually in the same location as the Ryder Cup.
This year’s Buffett Cup will be played in Cardiff, Wales at the Miskin Manor Hotel from September 12-16. This tournament is a competition between a handpicked team of professional players from Europe representing Germany, Norway, Italy and England, and twelve of the best USA players.
Each team has 12 players and a non-playing captain as in the Ryder Cup. There are always six tables in play, three with Europe North/South and three with USA North/South. The teams meet twice for a double session team competition; once for a double pair’s session and four times for Individual play.
The scoring is quite unique with the opportunity to win 198 Buffett points over the four days. When a team reaches 100 points it has won the trophy. If the scores are ties on 99 each, Europe who won the trophy in Louisville will retain it.
Playing for the United States is David Berkowitz and Alan Sontag, Fred Gitelman and Geoff Hampson, Bobby Levin and Steve Weinstein, Jill Levin and Jill Myers, Jeff Meckstroth and Eric Rodwell. Donna Compton is the non-playing captain.
