A Naples man was arrested Saturday by a National Park Service ranger on a charge of operating a swamp buggy while intoxicated, according to a Collier County Sheriff’s Office booking report.
Steven M. Nickel Jr., 31, of the 3500 block of 8th Avenue Northeast, was driving a swamp buggy on Bear Island in the Big Cypress National Preserve in Ochopee when a park ranger approached to conduct a permit inspection, according to the report.
“I could smell the odor of alcoholic beverages,” the ranger wrote in the report.
After field sobriety tests and a breath test refusal, Nickel was arrested, according to the report.
“When asked his reason for refusing the breath test, Nickels stated he didn’t feel he was impaired to drive,” the ranger wrote.
