NDN GULFSHORE SHOOTOUT: Cape Coral recovers from rout, defeats Lely

— Monday, the opening day of the Naples Daily News Gulfshore Shootout at Golden Gate High School, was a rough one for Lely High, which lost by 19 points to Palm Beach Gardens.

But it was even rougher for Cape Coral.

The Seahawks were routed 74-19 by Ensworth (Tenn.) in the late game.

Both teams responded with grit and determination in their consolation matchup Tuesday, with Cape Coral prevailing 72-58.

"Our kids have a lot of pride," Cape Coral coach Mark Rinehart said. "We were hurt and embarrassed after yesterday. The kids responded.

“Ensworth was a really good team but not (55) points better than us. We got shell-shocked, and our kids kind of quit and lost focus. But we were a lot better today.”

As on Monday, the Trojans (1-11) started a very young team -- two freshmen, two sophomores and a junior. The Seahawks started five seniors, and their experience was the difference in the fourth quarter.

Cape Coral (7-4) led just 58-54 early in the quarter, but the Seahawks were able to hit 11 of 13 foul shots to pull away for the victory.

Even in defeat, Lely coach Ryan Bowen liked what he saw from his team.

“We had a lot more energy and effort today,” he said. “We competed for four quarters.

“When you have so many young players, like we have, you look for them to remain coachable. It’s important that when you are struggling that the kids are still listening.”

Rinehart said he identified with Lely’s challenges.

“I’m in my fifth year and I know it takes time to rebuild a program,” he said. “You could see the Lely players believe in each other.

“It’s a tribute to the team and their coaches for them to be struggling and playing hard and with intensity.”

Leroy Greenridge paced the Trojans in scoring with 17 points. David Flynn ( five 3-pointers) of Cape Coral was the game’s high scorer with 22 points.

The Trojans will play Thursday at 10:45 a.m. against the loser of Tenoroc and Dunbar. Cape Coral will take on the winner of that game Wednesday at 10:45 a.m.
