LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Don’t attack Lely to promote new high school

Recently, the Marco Island Academy debate has taken on a new light. Jane Watt has deteriorated her cause to suiting the school district and attacking Lely. For this reason, I feel the need to put in my own two cents. A charter school should not be riding on a suit towards the very school district it wishes to receive funding and approval from. Nor should it be fueled by ignorance towards institutions they know nothing about. Ms. Jane Watt has most likely never stepped into Lely High School, and therefore she knows nothing about the good that goes on within its walls.

I attended the Marco Island Charter Middle School and I am now a student at Lely. The teachers at Lely are just as good and sometimes better than the teachers at the Charter Middle School and the programs provided at Lely are exceptional. I am actively taking part in band, AP classes, and sports teams and I have enjoyed every minute of my high school experience thus far.

I took the AP environmental class last year and earned a five out of five on the nationwide qualification test. The fact that Jane Watt would attack the academics of Lely is ridiculous and offensive, and my experience completely contradicts her statement that Lely is “one of the lowest performing schools in the United States”. Please do not believe the erroneous negative propaganda that comes from ignorant supporters of the Charter high school.

Go Alex! Let the students weigh in on this issue. Well done!

"I am a resident and taxpayer living on Marco Island and would like to express my opinion OPPOSING a charter high school on Marco Island for the following reasons:

• Very little support for this project by the people who live on the island
Marco Island is a retirement community
• No need for a high school on the island - this increases overall cost
A local private high school exists already and is underutilized
A fine school only 20 minutes away – Lely
• No place to put a high school - there is just no way to fit a school on the island
Tract K is too small and has active nesting eagles
"Force fitting" a high school on the island would be inefficient and disruptive to the community
• Decrease in safety by bussing additional children to Marco from the Naples area
• An underutilized asset when many children elect to stay at Lely
Marco children who stay at Lely
Naples children who do not elect to commute to Marco

A charter school is intended to help disadvantaged communities - not upscale white communities. A better idea would be to provide added resources to establish Lely as a charter high school. Please DO NOT provide support to establishing a charter high school on Marco Island"

Great letter!! Thank you for sharing your personal experience at Lely High School.
As we all know, the people who are badmouthing Lely have no experience with Lely - they are ignorant about Lely High School.
They should stop talking about Lely High School - the school that has been successfully educating Marco Island students for three and a half decades!

The only evidence for failure in intellect at Lely is the fact that in 2008, 80% of students there supported Obama for president, a manifest national nincompoop -- as Klabby has shown.

Congrats Alex, I am sure you will do well in life.

I have paid close attention to this and I do not recall any attacks on Lely other than the fact that it is a 45 minute ride in season and managing a kid in a local school and also one in Lely is very difficult. The records of the Charter schools versus regular schools speak for themselves and "school Choice" are buzz words being heard all over the country as folks try to figure a way out of the public school mess...suggest a look at the recent Romney and Gingrich books...both address the subject.

Most of the vitriol on this contraversy seems to be coming from people defending Lely...in another life I know it stemmed from the teachers union and the teachers that feared losing their jobs and would be discusted of the prospects of having to work on a year to year contract based on their performance. I do not know that to be the case here...but it could be. Looking on the positive side someone tell me why the excellent grade school and middle school experience we have had on Marco would not be replicated in a high school that we could have on Marco...I just don't get the negatve...does not make sense to me.

Klabby is totally wrong on promoting Gunga Jane's Marco Apartheid Academy.

I have just learned from reliable sources that actually he has little interest in this dubious institution.

The only reason he is championing this dim crusade is from a powerful secret crush he has on the not unattractive body of Gunga Jane.

In fact, Gunga Jane has cleverly exploited thisKlabby infatuation to promise Klabby that if he can swing things so this this costly monstrosity ever sees the light of day -- so Gunga Jane does not have to consign her 3 kids to the black hole of calcutta she feels the detested Lely to be and she can get a job as academic panjandrum -- there will be a night of steamy subtropic passion awaiting Klabby so that he can satisfy his unbridled lust on Gunga Jane's conveniently secluded lanai.

How could anyone feel that, with such resentment, a project like this could hope to be successful in any way or form?

It's the responsibility of this city government to promote the domestic tranquility of this island, not promote all this drama.

We elected you to make decisions, not to hire consultants! Grow a set will yea!

The Bottom Line:

It is not the responsibly of government or the taxpayers to find or fund a temporary or permanent site for the proposed charter high school.

Our city council members need to find some testicular fortitude and start representing the majority of taxpayers on this island and put an end to all this crap!!! NOW!

Ocram (Inactive) writes:

Our city council is being led by their testiculars when it comes to Jane. When it comes to presentations at council meetings who gets up first? Answer, Jane. How come when the rest of the citizens wanted to talk they were told that council was not discussing this issue or had nothing to do with it?

Whose names appeared on the Academy's fluffed up volunteer list? Answer, several city council and planning board member's names.

I think those testiculars are in overdrive and not for the concerns of the citizenry.

The problem with you OCRAM/BRILLO/AVANIT is that you have to find a lot of self excuses for your loser position. You are much to intelligent and creative to know who twisted the facts. You are against the new high school. Any support is welcome. The end justifies the means. Even a coalition with a misfit like Island-Idiot is for you a support in your mind. And you know that he covered some target groups. Not very smart Americans. You know it. You instrumental ed him. But that made me happy. It makes you weak. You and your standpoint. Island-Idiot is already done. Discredited by himself. Shadow and Vibrator are nut bags, peasant, illiterate. You know that. For you and your agenda just useless idiots. So don't argue with me twisting the facts. You know exactly that I post the truth and nothing else. You know exactly that I am under your skin. And you know exactly that I am right. With your or better with this pals you will lose. You must lose. Americans even on Marco Island can not be so s----- to understand what you want. A third class education for the kids just that you have your peace in your neighborhood. That is not the American way of life.

Fact?

At least 2 out of 3 (or is it up to a dozen now?) hero medals must have been won by serious injuries to the skull, maybe after getting hit by tossed beer bottles.

80% of WWII was won by exertions of the Brits and the Russians.

Often the Americans were just along for the ride.

Just look at the casualty lists.

By army stats, two out of three infantrymen never even fired their rifles in battle during that war.

Yet, now we are plagued by this pestiferous tottering legion of decrepit blowhards, whose war stories grow ever more fanciful with each repetition.

And if you won Vietnam, why is Saigon called Ho Chi Minh City today?

Maybe all of your hero medals stemmed from delusional psychological issues....

for my daughter it had more to do with the school being not all that clean with a combination of over packed classrooms that made it difficult to focus sometimes and kids that spoke no English allowed to skate by just wonder how many illegals are allowed to attend lely anyhow and before anyone badmouths that comment let the proper authorities look and find out thats all i have to say....

Marco island is a retirement community.......wrong...even though their are many retired people here as well as most Florida cities the fact that our beach front is covered in vacation rentals and RESORTS makes your comment look ignorant....Marco is in fact a Vacation destination and needs new young families to insure its growth and prosperity. yes, young families that will have children who will turn into high school age children who may or not choose to attend school here on the island or in naples that is what school of choice is about.
A charter school will fill that roll of choice for the future of the island.
also a private school is fine if you are rich a charter school is not private it is public so it would seem ignorant comments are made by the opposing group as well.

Not true. Most of the so-called younger families you seem to esteem are either unskilled quasi-transient hospitality workers or barely skilled pickup truck cowboys attracted here by the idea of a a sweet life over-billing naive retired homeowners for various partially required and semi-completed services.

"A charter school will fill that roll of choice for the future of the island."

Lely is a great school. Marco Island is Fantasy Island; our family chose Lely so our children could get a taste of reality, some culture and see that people are people regardless of their income level and the way they look. I support alternatives but have always felt that the "Academy" (The name alone reeks of arrogance) was simply a way of keeping “privileged” kids on the Island. My children have grown up with an understanding of cultural diversity and appreciate all people, no prejudice, no preconceived notions of how someone may act because of the way they look. Someday, when your children leave Marco for college they may have some culture shock. Leave Lely out of the Academy's vocabulary; the Academy is simply an alternative to Lely; one we chose not to take.
