The Marco Island City Council meeting begins at 5:30 p.m. Monday in the Community Room at 51 Bald Eagle Drive

Editor's note: The poll included above is a continuation of a poll posted earlier in 2010.

— Marco Island leaders once again are looking to purchase Tract K from the Collier County School Board — though some say it’s for the birds.

A group of Marco Island residents formed a political committee, the Marco Eagle Sanctuary, to prevent development of the vacant 11.6 acres on the west side of Tigertail Court between Somerset and Century drives. The political committee is particularly opposed to the proposed charter high school being on Tract K, which isn’t likely anyway because schools Superintendent Dennis Thompson recently nixed a proposal to lease the property to the charter school.

Jane Watt, the lead proponent for the Marco Island Discovery Center school, declined to comment specifically on the eagle sanctuary. However, she said, the school is to open on schedule in August despite reports that finances and securing a location remain significant hurdles.

Some Collier County School District officials support selling the property to the city. Marco Island City Council members, however, remain split on the idea.

“If — big if — the School Board is to sell Tract K, I think the city of Marco should be given strong consideration,” Collier County School Board member Barbara Berry said.

City Council Chairman Frank Recker supports the city considering a purchase of Tract K. Councilman Chuck Kiester, on the other hand, doesn’t.

The Marco Eagle Sanctuary political committee and corresponding nonprofit foundation developed a petition, drafted an ordinance and wrote a potential ballot question to pose to voters all in the hopes of the city taking ownership or control of the property to make it either a preserve, conservation area or eco-park, as they call it, for the American Bald Eagles.

The eco-park, according to documents filed with the city, could include an eagle observation deck.

There are at least two eagles and their fledglings nesting in the trees of Tract K that have returned for several years in a row.

Recker would prefer to take the offer from Thompson for the city to have a first purchase option for up to two years. It would cost the city just $100 to be given priority over any other potential buyers should they come, Recker said.

Meanwhile, the city should form a committee of citizens to study the best use of the land and decide if the city should purchase it, Recker said.

The current offer of approximately $2.6 million to be paid over 10 years without interest likely should be considered, he said.

“The proposals, whether they are for a bald eagle group or a group looking to put solar electric out there, seem to benefit people disproportionately instead of being for everyone. If it’s going to be an eco-park forever, that for sure should go to referendum,” Recker said.

Marco Island resident Carl Way, chairman of the Marco Eagle Sanctuary Foundation and leader of the efforts to keep Tract K for the protected species, couldn’t immediately be reached for comment.

Kiester, who said he does support a high school in Marco, doesn’t support the eagle sanctuary concept or the city purchasing Tract K.

“I will not support further indebtedness at this time of difficult economic times,” Kiester said.

During council’s previous discussions of the expense of putting the eagle sanctuary idea up for a referendum, Alan Gabriel of the Weiss-Serota law firm, which represents the city, advised that the Marco Eagle Sanctuary political committee is to be responsible for paying the cost of putting it on the ballot.

Way is scheduled to present the status of the eagle sanctuary idea at a council meeting scheduled to begin 5:30 p.m. Monday.

Article posted at 11:30 am. Yet over 200 total votes have been cast by 11:50am.

In only 20 minutes over 200 votes, yea right?????

You couldn't get that many people to votes in that amount of time.

The New York Daily news can't get that many people to vote in that short of a time.

The paper is stacking the deck. We all know which side this paper is on!

This paper is not fair nor balanced!! That's why it's free!

Ocram (Inactive) writes:

Once again we have a poll and once again it has been stacked by nearly 100 votes by Academy supporters in the first hour or so.

Like ALL of the previous polls this one will turn out to be AGAINST a high school on Tract K and the proponents will once again try to call foul or maybe fowl.

Why do we continue to bother with these newspaper polls and have what we truly need...... which is a community referendum so that we can put all of this foolishness to an end, once and for all. Without all the meaningless dribble that these blogs provide.

And shortly a word from the man of many talents, Klabautermann, to misdirect any further discussion on this blog

Do you, Klabautermann, realize that you attempted in vain when praised me in this post of yours.

You were the one called the racist and highly protested, even asking the Newpsaper to pull all the sick references to Hitler, SS, Nazis etc.

Now what do you do in order to garner attention?
You try to use what you called inappropriate and sick. You refer to things such as the gas chambers, etc. Yes it is disgusting and you have gone too far overboard!

Go ahead keep calling me your Fuhrer and irritate any respectful German or other decent person on this Island or for that matter anyone else who may be reading and paying attention to these blogs. They could be anywhere in the world.

Do you think that any decent person reading what you post would want to move near you? Do you think that anyone with children would let their kids play anywhere around you?

How about giving up on the constant vulgarity and start off the New Year with some decency for a change, then maybe someone out there will pay, serious, attention to you.

Keep it up and we all will know who is really doing the projection of their true inner thoughts.

Happy New Year

This is your post of December 10, 2010.

The problem with you OCRAM/BRILLO/AVANIT is that you have to find a lot of self excuses for your loser position. You are much to intelligent and creative to know who twisted the facts. You are against the new high school. Any support is welcome. The end justifies the means. Even a coalition with a misfit like Island-Idiot is for you a support in your mind. And you know that he covered some target groups. Not very smart Americans. You know it. You instrumental ed him. But that made me happy. It makes you weak. You and your standpoint. Island-Idiot is already done. Discredited by himself. Shadow and Vibrator are nut bags, peasant, illiterate. You know that. For you and your agenda just useless idiots. So don't argue with me twisting the facts. You know exactly that I post the truth and nothing else. You know exactly that I am under your skin. And you know exactly that I am right. With your or better with this pals you will lose. You must lose. Americans even on Marco Island can not be so s----- to understand what you want. A third class education for the kids just that you have your peace in your neighborhood. That is not the American way of life.

Enough development of Marco already!!! The construction projects like the Esplanade and Pier 81 has destroyed enough of this islands beauty!! The eagles deserve their own place and we should give it to them. Stop spending money to figure out how much money your spending on the sewer system and do some good for a change!! Spend the money on the land and leave it to the eagles!!!! I realize that eagles can't pay taxes or impact fees, but let them slide.

This article was posted at 11:30am. In 40 minutes 212 people voted in the poll.

4 hours have since passed and the total of votes in the poll are now 229.

That means 17 people voted in 4 hours, and 212 in 40 minutes.

Kelly, Many of us moved to this island based on the news that has been reported by this newspaper.

It is obvious that the number/votes in the poll have been skewed by you or someone who works for this newspaper.

The responsibility of this paper is to report the truth as well as the news.

On Monday I am contacting my attorney to speak with someone at E. W Scripps Corporate Headquarters in Cincinnati.

My attorney will ask them explane how 95 votes for the school just appeared out of nowhere when this article was posted!

People on this Island are tired of this type bull!

An email soliciting donations circulated by the Marco Eagle Sanctuary Foundation stated,"We need $36,000 per year the cover just the cost of leasing and maintaining the property known as Tract K."

One must ask just who is the source of that figure. One would assume there would not be a plea for funds if there is not a ready to be signed lease agreement. Yet the city is once again discussing the purchase of Tract K.

Add to the mixed messages the fact that while Dennis Thompson, in his advisory capacity, has nixed the idea of a school on Tract K, the fate of Tract K is in the hands of the School Board, not the outgoing Superintendent.

Inarguably, the School Board must operate under the Florida Department of Education Statutes not according to any special interests. One can therefore assume that their inaction signals a professional commitment to due consideration, as well it should. Ergo, the debate goes on with only one certainty . . . Everyone will not be happy.

I am very optimistic and thrilled to be a part of the Marco Island Charter High School Academy. The land was donated for a school by the Mackle Brothers for free! It will be wonderful to see this prestigious high school prosper for all our teenagers. This is all about creating another choice for education on a beautiful piece of real estate that was zoned for a school. The idea was that this school site was donated to the Island for free. For a school we so dearly deserve to enjoy for years to come. There are other sites to place our school but the truth is - that the other sites will cost a lot of money to purchase. What amazes me is how prudent, Jane Watt, Founding Board Member - is able to keep operational costs so low or almost nonexistent.

She is such a visionary who can get the community to share in the responsibilities and use their talents or monetary gifts to make this school so successful and without heavy debt.

That is why we are not giving up on receiving Track K from the District School Board. This parcel was intended to benefit public education on Marco Island, 9-12. Jane Watt, her Board of Director Team, and all of the volunteers at large - are legacy builders for educating our teenagers locally. And we are doing this in a wise and prudent manner to stay as debt free as possible!

Congratulations and Go Marco Island High School! HAPPY NEW YEAR 2011 TO OUR ENTIRE COMMUNITY WITH LOVE AND GOOD CHEER!!!!!!!

Ms. Servente,

This, once again, is your attempt to post innacuracies regarding the MIA and the zoning restrictions shown in the deed of Tract K.

You obviously have not read what those restricts actually are, otherwise why would you post information that is not true?

Your last line is also a misrepresentation of the truth in that you are saying Happy New Year to the whole community when it is obvious that you do not care about the people living near or around Tract K.

Which is your means of bothering people. Your childish behavior of repeating the "I know you are", but what am I" response has gotten "YOU" into this.

One thing that a grown up person does when they may have hurt somebody, inadvertently, is appologize and nowhere in your diatribe did you attempt to do that to Pilar and by her own statement, she was talking to you.

It may have taken you overnite to write your history lesson but it would have taken only a second or two to say "I am sorry" and that would have meant a whole lot more to anyone reading this.

I have been reading all this craziness before we moved to Marco. I have 2 children in school and one of them going to Lely, one going to TBE. I was nervous about putting our child into Lely, but we really had no choice. She is doing very well and the diversity is quite a change for her. She likes her school so far. But, what I see happening here is a community fighting over our children. I see it as there is a elementary and a middle school, why not a high school. Our children are our future not the eagles or the old. They have their places. And as far as someone saying this is a retirement community, wrong, when we moved here we were worried about that, we have so many children here growing and thriving in our community, to let them hear all this is pitiful. All I see and hear is selfish greed for those that find themselves really believing they are all rightous about preserving the island, get real. The kids are here and so are the schools, I wonder if the elementary and middle schools had to fight this hard. It's not about which high school would be better it's about our community and I've seen smaller towns and areas with schools K-12. Justsaying...
