Should FGCU pursue buying off-campus housing?

Good news.

Florida Gulf Coast University is addressing two needs at the same time. It is working on a shortage of space on campus and demand for dormitory rooms by considering the purchase of a private-sector apartment complex nearby.

The College Club apartments, with room for about 500 students a mile north of campus, next to Gulf Coast Town Center, would seem to be a good fit. A deal might even give FGCU more control over a property that has been problematic with student partying in the past.

Now we would like to hear more about another option for addressing FGCU growing pains — a campus including a performing arts center in the Naples area. Though everything revolves around funding, and money is tight these days, Greater Naples would like to know whether the project at U.S. 41 East and Goodlette-Frank Road — or elsewhere? — remains on the drawing boards, and/or for when?

More good news, perhaps?
