NAPLES — It wasn’t a decisive victory, but then again, sometimes all you need is one more point than your opponent and you can go home happy.
That was the case in the third annual City Champions Challenge that was held at the Arthur Allen Tennis Center at Cambier Park this past Saturday. The Naples team prevailed by winning six matches – one more than the players representing the city of Marco Island.
All the participants qualified to play in this fun challenge by winning their respective NTRP divisions in the City of Naples Tennis Championships held every May in downtown Naples at Cambier. Winning their matches for Naples were Angel Gutieriez (Men’s 3.0 singles), Brady Schofield (Men’s 3.5 singles), John Jermone (Men’s 4.5 singles), Dave Spahn/Linda Hayes (Mixed 7.0 doubles), Mimo Moustafaa/Heather Reynolds (Mixed 8.0 doubles) and Nina Harkness/Joanne Vrone (Women’s 7.0 doubles).
Super Seniors battle: The Naples Tennis Club hosted a major ITF-USTA Designated II Super Senior tournament last week. More than 250 singles players and 200 doubles teams competed in eight age-group divisions. Competitors included many of the top- ranked players in the world. The finals results follow:

Next on the Club's agenda is the Feb. 12 Mixed Doubles Night for players 3.5 and above. With a round-robin format, the event begins at 6 and ends at 8. Players may register with their own partner or ask the club to find one for them. Only the first 10 couples will be able to participate. Members of the Naples Grande pay $5 and non-members pay $15 with food and beverage included.

Rakich leads series: Jessica Rakich won this past weekend’s girls division of the USPTA/JusTennis Junior Tennis Series at Vineyards Park. In the semifinals, she defeated Viva Laas 8-4, and in the finals, she overcame Victoria Franklin 8-2.
Dylan Whiteside won the boys event with an 8-1 win over Colin Christensen and an 8-2 finals victory over J.P. Wichlinski.
With the first weekend of the Sereis in the books, Rakich has seven points in the standings, followed by Franklin and Whiteside with five points apiece.
The next Junior Tennis Series event is a singles tournament Feb. 20 at East Naples Community Park. The registration deadline is Thursday, Feb. 18. The eight-event series is designed to help novice players get started in tournament competition, with supervision and sportsmanship coaching from USPTA pros. Competitors win grand prix points for participation and
winning matches in main draws and consolation draws. All participants play a minimum of two supervised matches. Players interested may contact Collier County Parks and Recreation tennis pro Spike Gonzales at 248-0894.
Sneaky Pete’s play coming: The Club at Sterling Oaks will host the 11th annual Sneaky Pete's Tennis Tournament of Bonita Springs from Feb. 20-27. The tournament site is located in North Naples off U.S. 41.
The entry fee is $35 per event and players may enter a maximum of two events at $60. To sign up, call 566-1800 or go through the Internet at www.sneakypetestennis.com. There will be men's and women's singles and doubles in 3.0, 3.5, 4.0 and 4.5 divisions. There will also be mixed doubles in 6.0, 7.0 and 8.0 divisions.
Players must be available to play both Saturdays of the event. The first 175 entries receive a T-shirt and gift certificate to Sneaky Pete's restaurant in Bonita Springs. There will be a free player party at noon on Feb 27. Guests may attend the party for $8 each. The Sneaky Pete's entry deadline is 3 p.m. Feb. 16.
Ladies Competitive Doubles Academy: Play is held at Imperial Racquet Club held every Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to noon. This is for players 3.5 and above, capable of hitting with pace and direction. The cost is $75 for the six-hour/two-day program. Call 593-7652 for more information and to register.
