“On Golden Pond,” by Ernest Thompson, the hit Broadway play and motion picture, will be The Marco Players next production, opening Feb. 24, according to an announcement by Beverly Dahlstrom, president of the theater group.
“The Marco Players is fortunate to have two gifted and experienced actors in the lead roles of Norman and Ethel Thayer,” said Dahlstrom, who is additionally the show’s director. Naples Players veteran Michael Hennessey, who starred last season in the Marco Players’ show “The Love List,” plays Norman, and Marilyn Hilbert, whom audiences will remember from November’s production of Neil Simon’s “Jakes Women,” is Ethel.
They are joined by several newcomers to the Players: Julia Byrne is their daughter, Chelsea; Brian Schlager plays Bill her fiancé; Kevin Moriarty is Charlie the mailman; and Joey Byrne portrays Billy, Bill’s son and Chelsea’s soon-to-be stepson.
The story revolves around the Thayers’ 48th annual trip to their summer home on Golden Pond. They are soon joined by daughter Chelsea and her fiancé Bill and Bill’s 13-year-old son Billy. The couple is looking to leave Billy in the Thayers’ care while Chelsea and Bill, Sr. go off to Europe. The result is an evening of comedy, old hurts, and loving relationships as the 70-ish Thayers learn how to cope with a modern 13-year old, and Billy learns to assume responsibility for himself and to care for others.
Unintentionally humorous Charlie, the quintessential Maine mailman who had a crush on Chelsea in high school, has remained a good friend of the Thayers.
“This will be one of the most enjoyable evenings you will ever spend in our theater,” says Dahlstrom.
“All age levels are represented, and the play is a slice out of so many of our lives — especially today as the economy has forced many young families to turn to their parents for survival.”
