island Arts: MICA kicks off year with activities, awards

Happy New Year from your friends at the Marco Island Civic Association! In light of the new year and resolutions that we all make, MICA is taking steps to fulfill its resolution to be sure Marco Islanders are educated about our island-wide issues.

Please join us at 6 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 7, at City Council Chambers, as MICA hosts its City Council Candidates Forum. All four candidates: Joe Batte, Ted Forcht, Chuck Kiester and Larry Magel, have confirmed their attendance. MICA board members will pose questions to the candidates, followed by questions from the audience. There are many important issues facing our city in the next couple of years, and it is imperative that each voter cast an informed vote. Please do not put your ballot in the mail until after MICA’s Candidates Forum on Jan. 7. This event is open to the public.

MICA’s annual membership meeting will be held at 6 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 12, at San Marco Parish Hall on San Marco Road. It is at this meeting that MICA’s Humanitarian of the Year award is presented. This prestigious award is given each year since 1998, and there is great excitement leading up to the presentation. Who will the 2010 Humanitarian be? Mimi Torbush received the first award for her grand efforts on behalf of the Wishing Well. Recent humanitarians include Jane Williams, for Meals on Wheels; Karen Saeks, for Bedtime Bundles; Nicki Davis, for Joy of Giving; and our 2009 Junior Humanitarian Callie Bennett, for her efforts on behalf of Camp Able.

Also at MICA’s Annual Meeting on Jan. 12, world-renowned speaker Paul F. Davis will take to the stage and enlighten our members a bit. Mr. Davis has traveled to more than 55 countries, written numerous books, and is a spectacular motivational speaker. He has appeared on “Oprah” and “Fox & Friends.” What better way to kick start your new year’s resolutions than by attending MICA’s annual meeting and listening to the inspiring words of Paul F. Davis? For more information call the MICA office at 642-7778.
