It’s that time again, the city council election. Candidates come out with the “facts” about all things they want us to believe, spelling out with great clarity what they want us to think. It makes good reading but it doesn’t always make good facts.
Letters to the editor are also somewhat confusing of the facts, like Isabella Marcotrigiano saying that Chuck Kiester is responsible for the STRP not being what it was supposed to be. If my memory serves me well, Chuck was against the STRP from the beginning. The men who are running for re-election are a known quantity.
But the new candidate, what about him? Mr. Magel comes with a very prestigious background. He also tells us about the facts. Whose facts are these, his or his mentor’s, the man who made us buy a pig-in-a-poke water system some years ago that we have spent many millions of dollars trying to make work properly? We know the answer to that.
I am always suspect of a newcomer who tells you how great he is. I wonder what his real intentions are for Marco Island, especially when he is backed by our ‘water man’ who also wants us to buy an electric system. We don’t need a big-city type on Marco. We need small-town common sense, something they don’t teach in college. We need a known property, and that is found in the two men who have served us in the past, Chuck Kiester and Ted Forcht, as well as a man who has shown his concerns for Marco, Joe Batte. Let’s put them in to help make our ‘team’ of councilors represent us, instead of someone else with an axe to grind.
