It’s known as Hot-lanta but there was nothing scorching about the second night of American Idol Season Nine. In the past, Idol has found such talent as Clay Aiken, Fantasia, and Kimberly Locke in Atlanta, but not this year.
The highlight of the night came when 20-year-old Lamar Royal accosted the judges and had to be escorted out by four bouncers after being rejected.
AUDITION LOCATION: Atlanta
GUEST JUDGE: Mary J. Blige: She didn’t add much but then again not much to judge.
■ Jermaine Sellers, 26, Joliet, Ill.: He takes care of his mom who suffers from Spinal Bifida. The professional church singer sang a R&B version of Joan Osborne’s “What if God was One of Us.” “It was anointed,” Blige said.
■ Antonio “Skii Bo Ski” Wheeler, 22, Orlando Fla. (Designer Salesman) He told the judges that he is the whole package and then he compared himself to the $1 Store. That’s about how much he is going to make during his career.
■ Vanessa Wolfe, 19, Venore, Tenn. She is a country bumpkin who comes from a town of 600 and she likes to jump off bridges for fun. In her $4 pink dress, she impressed the judges with her authentic country vibe.
■ Bryan Walker, 25, Sevierille, Tenn. The police officer faked out the judges with his performance.
■ Best friends, Lauren Sanders and Carmen Turner, both from Baxley, Ga. auditioned together. The judges sent Turner to Hollywood and Sanders home. But I agree with Simon Cowell and both should have gone home together.
OTHERS GOING TO HOLLYWOOD:
■ Keia Johnson, 26, Memphis (Marketing Representative); She belted out Celine Dion’s "My Heart Will Go On" and made it unique.
■ Holly Harden 20, Rockmart Ga. She sounded like Kelly Pickler when she talked and her guitar outfit was even more annoying. But somehow she had enough of a voice to make it through to Hollywood.
■ Mallory Haley, 20, Winner S.D.
TRAIN WRECKS AND FREAK SHOWS:
■ Dewone Robinson, 27, Atlanta: The sales associate lyric “It’s over” set the tone for the night.
■ Blake Smith, 20, Covington, Ga.: The waiter wore a T-Shirt saying “Britney Spears Changed My Life” and after hearing him sing his life must have been pretty miserable before Britney.
■ Christy Maria Agronow, 25, Atlanta: The TV show host sang “Life is a Battlefield” but her singing was more like a land mine.
MOST MEMORABLE JUDGE COMMENT
“This guy has nine lives,” said Cowell about 26-year-old Jesse Hamilton who claimed he almost died three times but couldn’t remember the words to Garth Brooks’ “The River.”
