Season. Offseason.

Southwest Florida has been working to leave those concepts behind as we move toward more of a year-round economy and sense of community.

There is a throwback in the news as the Naples-Fort Myers Greyhound Track in Bonita Springs resorts to a seasonal schedule that calls for racing in the winter and spring, while the dogs head east for the summer and fall.

Track officials say the move is due to supply and demand and hopefully is a precursor of casino-style gambling taking up the slack. Race fans also know that added demand and betting for races that do remain in Bonita will drive up the payoffs.

With animal rights advocates still nipping at greyhound racing, this is one step into the past that may be hailed as a step in another direction as well — forward.
