Cape Coral man charged with grand theft auto, battery

A Cape Coral man whose acquaintance said he was too drunk to drive was arrested early Tuesday on charges of stealing her Jeep and hitting her.

Fidel Angel Lucio, 28, of the 200 block of Southeast 6th Terrace, remained Wednesday in Lee County Jail on charges of grand theft auto and battery. Bond was denied.

According to a Lee County Sheriff’s Office report:

Maria L. Barroso, whose last name also is spelled Barrosa in the report, 36, of Bonita Springs, told deputies that at 10:30 p.m. Monday she drove her and her husband’s 1993 Jeep Cherokee to her sisters Cape Coral house to meet Lucio. She took him to a nearby gasoline station and he wanted to drive. She told him no because he was drunk and doesn’t have a driver’s license.

He became angry, punched her in the face and grabbed her neck. She moved to the passenger seat and he drove to Bonita Springs. Lucio took her cellular telephone and would not let her answer when it rang.

Once they got into Bonita Springs, she jumped from the Jeep and went home, leaving her purse and phone behind.

Just after 4 a.m. Tuesday, a deputy went by Lucio’s house and saw the Jeep in the driveway. Lucio was in the back seat. He claimed he was not driving and that his girlfriend left the Jeep at his house.

Barroso’s purse and two cell phones were found in the Jeep.
