Report: Worker dies in San Carlos Park construction accident

A worker died at a construction site at the Belle Lago community in San Carlos Park about 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, according to the Lee County Sheriff's Office.

Occupational Safety and Health Administration officials have confirmed the death at 19341 La Serena Drive, but they did not release details including the man's name and what happened.

The homeowners have an active permit for the construction of a pool, NBC-2 reported, but OSHA could not confirm what kind of work was going on at the time of the accident.

The community is north of Estero Parkway and east of U.S. 41.

OSHA has up to six months from the beginning of its investigation to issue its findings and determine whether any OSHA standards were violated, said Michael D'Aquino, OSHA spokesman.

Investigations can be initiated by either emergency services or the company. However, D'Aquino was unsure who contacted the Department of Labor on this case.

The department typically reviews cases where there's three or more injured or one fatality.

“But that's just a rule of thumb,” D'Aquino said, adding that in this case there was one injury.

Belle Lago is a Toll Brothers Community. The Horsham, Pa.-based company, is currently building in 20 states.
