Bill Green: Of endings and new beginnings

If you’ll allow me a little self indulgence …

October 2006: I visited Marco Island for the very first time. As I crossed the Jolley Bridge, as many people have before and since, I fell in love. I decided to look for a job here.

November 2006: I’m hired as a copy editor for the daily Marco Eagle.

November 2007: I’m named editor of the Eagle; we introduce a redesign, and change the Eagle to three times weekly. Many changes have followed since.

Greek philosopher Heraclitus may have been the first to point out that the only constant is change, saying something to the effect of we cannot step twice into the same river; for other waters are ever flowing on to you.

While the news I’m about to share with you should not be considered earth shattering for you the audience, or for the company I work for, Naples News Media Group, it is a big deal for me. My excitement for the future is tempered only by a slightly broken heart – as I will be giving up a job that I love.

On Sunday, the Eagle will be published with my name as editor for the final time. I have accepted a new position coordinating content for all the Naples News Media Group community websites and publications, including The Banner (Bonita), Collier Citizen, Vista Semanal and the Marco Eagle.

It has been both an honor and privilege to serve this community. And I will miss dealing with the ups and downs on a daily basis. However, I’m not moving. I will still be shopping here and eating here, and I will still be working here on occasion.

Leigh Tahirovic is the new editor of the Eagle. And I congratulate her. You are getting a top notch editor to replace me. Tahirovic most recently served as editor of The Banner. Before that she was editor of the Naples Sun Times. She’ll be sharing a little more about herself in an upcoming Eagle.

Thank you to everyone who took a moment out of their day to send their thanks our way. Thank you to those of you who held me accountable; who took us to task and made us better in the process.

Keep fighting for what you believe in. Use and the Eagle to make your voices heard. I’m very proud to be a part of such a vocal community. It’s an editor’s dream.

..if it makes you feel any better Bill, I don't think the NY Times editor could make it on Marco.

Reasonable people understand this; while Conservatives like Rush Limbaugh spend a lifetime trying to build a dam across the river's mouth.
