A 29-year-old Bonita Springs man tried to pull a fast one on the wrong person — passing off 100 over-the-counter pills as prescription-only Roxicodone, while making a deal with an undercover cop, the Collier County Sheriff’s Office reported.

Now Joel Christian Lopez, of the 27600 block of Imperial River Road, is facing a felony charge of selling a substance in lieu of a controlled substance.

On Jan. 14, an undercover detective spoke with Lopez and negotiated to buy 100 Roxicodone pills for $1,100, according to an arrest report. Later that day, the detective met with Lopez at 4045 Golden Gate Parkway and completed the transaction.

However, when the detective returned to the office, investigators identified the pills as diphenhydramine, a non-controlled antihistamine commonly sold as Benadryl.

Deputies located Lopez on Tuesday and arrested him.
