In the first half of the year, foreclosure activity in Cape Coral-Fort Myers slowed by nearly 30 percent from a year ago.

But the area still posted the second highest foreclosure rate among metros during the first six months of this year, according to a report by Irvine, Calif.-based RealtyTrac. Nearly 5 percent of all households – or one in every 20 – received a foreclosure related filing from January to June. There were a total of 18,179 filings in those months.

The rankings are based on default notices, scheduled auctions and bank repossessions.

Other Florida cities in the top 10 for the first half of the year were Orlando-Kissimmee at No. 8 and Miami-Fort Lauderdale-Pompano Beach at No. 10.

Naples-Marco Island ranked No. 13 in the nation for its foreclosure rate in the first half of the year. It had 6,251 filings, or one for every 31 households. That was down less than 1 percent from May and down more than 10.5 percent from the first six months of 2009.

In June, Naples-Marco Island had 1,132 filings, or one for every 171 households. That was down 8.49 percent from May and down nearly 17.5 percent from a year ago.

By comparison, Cape Coral-Fort Myers had 3,264 foreclosure-related filings last month. That was down 8.72 percent from May and down more than 32 percent from June 2009.
