Share a glass of wine and beautiful sunset views at Glory of the Grape wine tasting

New friends, new flavors, and a new venue make this gala one of Marco Island Area Chamber of Commerce’s nicest events of the year.

The Marco Island Area Chamber of Commerce will host its annual Glory of the Grape wine tasting event at 6 p.m. Sunday, June 13, at CJ’s On The Bay at the Esplanade.

Tickets, $50 per person, includes an evening of wine tasting, with heavy hors d’oeuvres to complement each wine, followed by a live auction.

Wine tastings are events designed to give enthusiasts the opportunity to sample a range of wines. They are popular because they overcome the limitations of trying new wines at home, one bottle at a time, without the knowledge and expertise of others. At wine tastings, you can learn from others who share your interest in wines, some of whom may have more experience than you, and can help you train your palate.

If you’ve ever been to a wine tasting, you know there are some points of etiquette to be aware of. Because smell is an important part of tasting, smoking and wearing perfumes or scented toiletries are avoided, as they interfere with tasters’ ability to experience a wine’s aroma. Courteous wine tasters also do not volunteer their opinions about a wine until everyone has had a chance to taste it. Lastly, remember that alcohol is absorbed more slowly on a full stomach, so have something substantial to eat.

It’s been said that learning about wines is like space travel: once you get going, there’s no end in sight. It’s a fascinating experience, full of new flavors, new places and new friends.

At this Sunday’s Glory of the Grape Wine Tasting event, you can learn tips about buying, ordering and enjoying wine that everyone wants to know, but most people don’t. From practical tips, like knowing the difference between a Chardonnay and a pinot noir, to learning more about yourself, whether a beginner or true connoisseur, like discerning where a good, practical knowledge of wine leaves off and pretension begins, Glory of the Grape will pique your interest.

Sponsors of the event include Marco Island businesses, like the Marco Island Eagle, Island Country Club, Publix, Regions Bank, CJ’s On The Bay, M & I Bank and Iberia Bank.

This year’s theme for the event is A Taste of the States. Wines from selected states across the country will be featured.

According to the wine distributor Southern Beverage website, to discover the world of wine is to truly discover the power of your senses.

Wine can be found on virtually every continent, according to Southern Beverage information, with many regionally unique choices. Rieslings in Germany, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne in France, Rioja and Sherry in Spain, Chianti in Italy, and Madiera in Portugal have been with us for centuries. Americans have developed new varietals and innovative technologies to create California/Bordeaux blends, called “Meritage” wines.

Marco Island Area Chamber of Commerce Director of Marketing Vicki Williams says, “This is one of our nicest events; it’s very social, and we’re excited about the new venue, CJ’s On The Bay. We also have lots of new members, and we’re looking forward to their participation very much.”

CJ’s On The Bay is a favorite Marco Island dining spot among locals, with its beautiful views of Smokehouse Bay and summer sunsets. Jacquie Koon, who owns the restaurant with husband Curt Koon, is a member of the Chamber’s Board of Directors.

Whatever your level of experience or preference in wines, it is meant to be enjoyed and shared, like a beautiful view or sunset. Have fun while learning about wine, at the Glory of the Grape wine tasting. Find out more by calling 394-7549.
