Chef Darren McGrady has had a dream career cooking at Buckingham Palace for Princess Diana and Queen Elizabeth. It all started with a bird’s eye view at Prince Charles and Diana’s wedding and a little determination.
“We spent the night on The Mall for the royal wedding and actually caught a glimpse of Lady Diana,” said McGrady.
After the wedding he thought he would like to work at Buckingham Palace, and he went home and applied for a job there. A month later, McGrady had landed a position as a junior chef.
“Working at the Palace was incredible,” said McGrady. “They had all the best ingredients, all the best produce. Everything was served on the best silver.”
When Prince Charles and Diana split, McGrady became a personal chef to Diana and worked for her until she died.
McGrady is in Naples this weekend to prepare an elegant six-course dinner at the “Dine Like Royalty” event as a finale to the art exhibit of Diana’s dresses, which has been on display since March.
The meal is Sunday at 6 p.m. at the Naples Hilton, 5111 U.S. 41 N. Tickets start at $150 dollars. The “Princess Diana: Dresses of Inspiration” exhibit continues through Sunday at the von Leibig Art Center, 585 Park Street.
