NAPLES — Watch chef Willie Germain of Harold’s Place cook the perfect burger on the Cook It! video and read about the 21-year history of a Naples favorite, its chickee bar.
You’ll be humming, ”Where everybody knows your name and they’re always glad you came,” the theme song from “Cheers,” before and after you visit Harold’s Place. This Naples landmark has been a favorite to residents and visitors since August 1981 and is still owned and hosted by Cari and Tom Larcomb and partner Joe Dinunzio. The outdoor space started with nine bar stools (no tables), a cork bar top and a Weber charcoal grill. Today the restaurant seats 70 and has one of the best known chickee bars in Naples, built by the O.B. Osceola family. The bar’s burger has been voted best burger in Naples by readers of the Naples Daily News, Gulfshore Life, Talk of the Town and Best in the West.
Germain has been cooking there for 15 years and James Brewer, the kitchen manager, has been a fixture since the opening in 1981. The burger is made of 8 ounces of prime black Angus meat and served on a New York Costanzo Bakery bun with lettuce, tomato and a large slice of Spanish onion.
All produce is from Oakes Farms on Davis Boulevard and local tomatoes are the only ones good enough to top the burger. There’s a choice of grilled onions, grilled mushrooms, jalapeno peppers, American, Swiss, cheddar, pepper jack or crumbled blue cheese as add-ons. Or have it plain and just enjoy the taste of a well-made burger.
