Sand Bar slips into first in Island Division

Though they easily won the Marco Division, Joey’s Pizza’s unbeaten streak ended at 19 when Islander Restaurant gave them a 19-3 whooping.

In the Island Division, Sand Bar took over first place from Sunset Grille and Nacho Mama’s.

Here are the results by order of when games were played.

ISLAND DIVISION

Sunset Grille, 20, Rookies, 1

Craig Cunningham continued ripping the cover off the ball with two three-run home runs, knocking in seven runs on three hits. Dan Dumbauld also had a three-run homer and four RBI, while Bill Shurina hit a two-run homer. Jim George had three RBI and Murph Knapke three hits for the Grille. Winning pitcher Jerry Cnudde limited Rookies to seven hits.

Sand Bar, 9, Bertram Orthopedics, 6

Roy Hern and Tom Pugh had three hits each for Sand Bar, with Hern driving in three runs. Steve Sayre had two RBI, John Remhoff, Denny Lello and John Luegering each had two hits in support of winning pitcher Ron Engels. Herm Griffith had three doubles and drove in two runs for Bertram’s. Dom Fiorda had a solo home run and John DeRosa and Jim Cavanagh each slapped out three hits.

Nacho Mama’s, 18, The Pub, 5

Graydon Fueller and Tom McCullough led Nacho’s 33-hit attack with four hits each, while Fueller plated four runs. Jimmy Cuevas, Jerry Engel, Rich Krumholz, Bill James and Jack O’Brien each collected three hits. One of Krumholz’s hits was a two-run homer. Engel had a triple and three RBI. Larry Anspach and winning pitcher Bill Griffin had two RBI. Lou Wolfenson had three hits, Murph Knapke and Butch Courson had two hits and two RBI each for The Pub. Courson also made a number of spectacular defensive plays.

Nacho Mama’s, 6, Sand Bar, 2

In a pitcher’s duel, Bill Griffin bested Ron Engels by limiting Sand Bar to six hits. Nacho’s exploded for five runs in the second inning. Jerry Engle, Tom Angelo, Jeff Hultgren and Jimmy Cuevas had two hits each for Nacho’s. Engel and Hultgren had two RBI. Joe Cervelli had two hits for Sand Bar, including a run-scoring triple.

The Pub, 13, Rookies, 9

Pitcher Lou Wolfenson contributed to his win with three hits, including a lead-off solo home run and drove in three runs. Tom Porter and Charley Zimmer also had three hits each, with Fran Roche and Fran Diotte driving in two runs for The Pub. Roger Fleming of Rookies had two hits, including a three-run home run. John Remhoff had three hits and Ralph Leiterding had two RBI.

Sunset Grille, 19, Bertram Orthopedics, 11

Mike Hopkins had six RBI, four on a grand slam home run for the Grille. Murph Knapke recorded four hits, with Craig Cunningham, Jim George, Jack Mateja, Bill Shurina and Jerry Cnudde each having three hits. Cunningham smashed a home run while driving in five runs. Shurina had four RBI and Cnudde two RBI. Bertram’s Dom Fiorda was ripped out four hits, with two RBI and John Cavanagh had three hits. Herman Griffith cracked a two-run homer and Ed Hamill stroked a triple.

Bertram Orthopedics, 9, Nacho Mama’s, 4

John Cavanagh provided the spark with three hits and two RBI for Bertram’s win. Teammates Herman Griffith, Dave Banghart, Rich Schiller and John DeRosa all had two hits. Dom Fiorda had a triple. Tom Angelo, Rich Krumholz and Jim Cuevas each had two hits for Nacho’s, with Angelo driving in two runs.

The Pub, 16, Sunset Grille, 15

The Pub scored six runs in the bottom of the ninth inning, rallying from a 15-10 deficit for the win. The key blow came from Fran Diotte, driving in two runs for the win. Jerry Engel rapped out four hits and Butch Coursen, Dave Coward each had three hits. Lou Wolfenson and Paul Vorwich had two run home runs and three RBI each, with Fran Roche, Coward, Coursen, and Diotte having two for the Pub. Sunset’s Mike Hopkins and Don Rooksbury had three hits apiece. Hopkins smacked a two-run homer. Jim George, Jack Mateja and Bill Shurina had three RBI each, with Shurina slamming a triple.

Sand Bar, 23, Rookies, 13

Sand Bar launched a 30-hit barrage, cruising to the win and sole possession of first place. Roy Hern, John Luegering and Ron Engels each had four hits, with Bob Levasseur, Joe Cervelli, Steve Sayre and Tom Pugh each collecting three hits. Hern, Pugh, and Bill Thompson each had two-run home runs. Bob Levasseur had a triple. Rookies Nick Brooks and Roger Fleming drove in three runs and John Gill two. Brooks had three hits with a solo home run, and Fleming smacked a three-run homer.

MARCO DIVISION

Joey’s Pizza, 15, Crazy Flamingo’s, 0

Bob Kirsinger, Leroy Fishleigh, Jack Stevenson, Doug Patton, Roger Wise and Bill Moors all rocketed home runs. Fishleigh ended up with four RBI, and Patton and Ed Hamill drove in three runs each, with Hamill having three hits. Roger Wise, the big right-handed pitcher from Mansfield, Ohio, limited Flamingo’s to five hits.

Islander Restaurant, 13, Marco Community Bank, 10

Jim Dorey was the difference in the game when he broke a 10-10 tie in the last inning with a two-run triple. Danny O’Sullivan powered a three-run blast. Islander teammates, George Kirk, George Bennett and Jim White all had two hits for the Islander. The Bank was led by Buff Morris, who hammered a three-run homer. Bruce Steele and Tom Purtell had two hits and two RBI each for the Bank.

CJ’s on the Bay, 13, ADKOS, 6

Mike Gardner had three hits and three RBI, while Bill Diamond, John Hedges and Jake Jacobson also had three hits, driving in two runs each for CJ’s. Diamond smacked a two-run homer. Don Schwartz had three hits and drove in two runs for ADKOS. Teammates Fuzzy Fazekas, Doug Smith, Chet Dal Bianco and Steve Roberts each had two hits.

CJ’s on the Bay, 11, Marco Community Bank, 5

Back-to-back home runs by Ray Niemeyer and Dom Fiord led to an eight-run inning and a come-from-behind win for CJ’s. Niemeyer’s blast was a three-run shot. Don Schwartz had three hits and two RBI and Keith Stought and Mike Gardner contributed two hits each. Joe Furst had three hits, while Tony Kochevar and Bruce Steele had two hits each for the Bank.

Crazy Flamingo’s, 9, Islander Restaurant, 6

Dick DeAnna delivered the key blow, breaking a 6-6 tie and giving Crazy Flamingo the win. DeAnna, Ron Burger, Nick Brooks and Tom Paterson had two hits each, with Brooks lacing a triple. Islander had two big home runs, one from Darryl Judson, a three-run blast and Fuzzy Fazekas a two-run homer.

Joey’s Pizza, 17, ADKOS, 15

The Pizza boys had to hold off a late-game rally by ADKOS for the team’s 19th win. Ed Hamill had four RBI, three coming on a three-run homer. Doug Patton, Jack Stevenson, Leroy Fishleigh and Lee Dilk each drove in two runs. Fred Kramer and Fred Carlson had three hits each for Joey’s. Bernie Berman drove in three runs, with Pete Baker, Don Schwartz, and Fuzzy Fazekas each driving in two for ADKOS. John Ranieri had three hits and made numerous defensive plays around the mound, as did Schwartz in left field. Steve Roberts and Fazekas hammered triples.

CJ’s on the Bay, 7, Crazy Flamingo’s, 6

CJ’s had to hold off a last-inning rally by Flamingo’s for the win. Flamingo’s scored two runs in the last inning, but came up a run short. Mike Gardner provided the scoring punch for CJ’s with three hits and three RBI. Team members Leon Schmitt and Roger Fleming had two hits each, with Schmitt driving in two runs. John Arceri, Ron Burger and Jim Monnier had two hits each for Flamingo’s.

Marco Community Bank, 20, ADKOS, 5

The Bank’s Murph Knapke had four hits and five RBI and Tom Purtell three hits and four RBI, with both launching two-run homers. Buff Morris contributed three hits, while winning Pitcher Joe Furst and Bruce Steele drove in two runs apiece. ADKOS had Don Schwartz, Manny Miyar, and Doug Smith with two hits each and Schwartz driving in two runs.

Then it happened.

Islander Restaurant, 19, Joey’s Pizza, 3

Butch Monson shut down Joey’s powerful line-up ending its unbeaten season. Joey’s could only muster five hits against Monson, with Lee Dilk driving in two of Joey’s runs. Monson drove in six runs, including a grand slam home run. Jim Dorey had two home runs, driving in five runs. Danny O’Sullivan continued his power hitting with a two-run homer and Bill Kayhart also drove in two runs.

ISLAND DIVISION STANDINGS

Sand Bar, 15-5, Nacho Mama’s and Sunset Grille, each 14-6, The Pub and Bertram Orthopedics, each 8-12 and Rookies, 1-19.

MARCO DIVISION STANDINGS

Joey’s Pizza, 19-1, Marco Community Bank, 11-9, Islander Restaurant and CJ’s on the Bay, each 10-10, ADKOS, 8-12 and Crazy Flamingo’s, 2-18.
