The latest incarnation of our favorite coffee house is Bayshore Landing Cafe, at the same location as the former Bayshore Coffee House. Local musician Robyn Schoessel and her family have taken over, spiffed the place up, and are once again offering quality live music in a casual atmosphere. The place is still not fancy and we wouldn’t want it to be. Schoessel has created a pleasant seating area in the entry room and gotten rid of some of the old hippy-dippy decor.
Schoessel tells me that - surprise - Friday bluegrass night is the big hit so far.
The night we went the trio of Dan Banks, Matt Baxley and Ben King were performing mostly original songs. The style is acoustic rock/adult contemporary. Banks, lead guitar, and Baxley, drummer, both performed their own songs in a straightforward and effective way. Both have sweet voices and expressive styles. We especially enjoyed Baxley’s “What is the Time” and Banks’s “We Can Finally See.” Banks is hoping to hit the touring circuit. He enjoys playing at Bayshore landing for the same reason we enjoy going there. This venue allows artists to focus on less familiar work rather than sticking to chickee-hut music.
We talk a lot about our quality of life here in Naples and with cause. The performing arts scene is truly remarkable for a community this size. What we lack are less formal drop-in venues like this one. Schoessel is a smart community-minded woman who sees the future of the Bayshore area and wants to be part of it. Let’s hope that future is not too far away.
