Nacho Mama’s, Joey’s Pizza Senior champs

Nacho Mama’s earned its Island Division championship, knocking off contender Sand Bar twice. Then Bertram Orthopedics gave a lending hand by upsetting Sunset Grille to give Nacho’s the championship.

In the Marco Division, Joey’s Pizza, the bell ringer since the season began, was officially crowned the champions. This week the league continues its playoffs.

Here are the games in order of play.

ISLAND DIVISION

Nacho Mama’s, 15, Sand Bar, 13

Nacho’s and Sand Bar slugged it out with Nacho’s holding on for the win. Graydon Fueller rocketed a two-run homer in the seventh that was the difference. Larry Anspach was a key contributor with three hits and three RBI for Nacho’s. Teammates Rich Krumholz had four hits, with Tom Angelo, Tom McCullough and Jack O’Brien, who had a triple, driving in two runs. Sand Bar’s Roy Hern and Steve Sayre each had four hits and Ron Engels three. Teammates Denny Lello and John Luegering drove in three runs and Hern two.

Sunset Grille, 15, The Pub, 9

Jack Mateja launched a three-run homer, leading the Grille to victory. Ray Niemeyer and Craig Cunningham each had three hits and two RBI, with Jim George and Jim Green also having two RBI. Butch Coursen had three hits for The Pub, with Mike Galatis, Jerry Engel, and John Barrett each driving in two runs.

Bertram Orthopedics, 5, Rookies 3

John Cavanagh drove in three runs and Herman Griffith stroked three hits to pace Bertram’s. John DeRosa and Dom Fiorda added two hits and a RBI apiece. Rookies Nick Brooks had two hits and a RBI.

Nacho Mama’s, 15, Sand Bar, 9

Nacho Mama’s claimed the Island Division championship with win over Sand Bar and a Sunset Grille loss later in the day. Nacho’s used the long ball to win, hitting four home runs. Jimmy Cuevas, Larry Anspach and Graydon Fueller had two-run shots and Rich Krumholz a solo shot. Cuevas ended the day with four RBI on three hits, which also included a triple. Krumholz had three hits and Tom Angelo and Tom McCullough drove in two runs each. Sand Bar’s John Remhoff, Bob Levasseur and Steve Sayre each had three hits. Remhoff and Pete Oellrich launched home runs.

Bertram Orthopedics, 19, Sunset Grille, 4

Bertram’s unleashed a 28-hit assault on the Grille, sending any thoughts of winning the division into the sunset. Bertram’s John Cavanagh collected three hits and three RBI. Dave Banghart, John DeRosa, Dom Fiorda, Ralph Leiterding, and Mike Behr also had three hits each, while Rich Schiller and Bill Kaschube drove in two runs. Cavanagh also had a towering home run. Sunset Grille’s Bill Shurina had four hits, with Ron Hobson and Butch Coursen each having three hits.

The Pub, 12, Rookies, 3

Tom Porter rocketed a grand slam home run and Butch Coursen a three-run rocket to pace The Pub. Jim Williams drove in two runs in support of winning pitcher Lou Wolfenson. Bill Himsel, Dick Corley and Al Bozzo had two hits each for Rookies.

MARCO DIVISION

ADKOS, 11, Islander Restaurant, 10

ADKOS rallied from a 7-1 deficit to win when Steve Roberts drove in two in the last inning. Roberts also had a solo home run, while Pat Coraggio cranked a three-run homer and Dick Amiott drove in three runs on two hits. Islander’s Dan Stanard and Dan O’Sullivan each had three hits, with O’Sullivan having a triple and two RBI. Stan Sutphen had two hits, one a grand slam home run.

Joey’s Pizza, 19, CJ’s on the Bay, 11

The old pros Mark Nahabedian, 85 and Leroy Fishleigh, 75, each cracked three-run homers for Joey’s. Fred Kramer and Roger Wise each had three hits, while Kramer had three RBI and Wise two. CJ’s Leon Schmitt stroked a three-run home run. Don Schwartz and Barry Bates lined three hits, with Bates having three RBI.

Marco Community Bank, 10, Crazy Flamingo’s, 9

Murph Knapke clocked a walk-off extra inning two-run homer for the Bank, earning second place in the Marco Division. Don Schwartz, Tom Purtell and Knapke had tree hits, with Chuck Wilson driving in two runs. Jim Conway had a big game, collecting four RBI on three hits, while Jim Langdon drove in two for Flamingo’s.

Islander Restaurant, 12, CJ’s on the Bay, 10

In a game determining third and fourth place in the final Marco Division standings, the Islander had to survive a last inning assault by CJ’s, which scored seven runs in the last inning. Bill Kayhart had a three-run home run, with Al Cenicola and Darryl Judson hitting solo shoots for the Islanders. Winning pitcher Butch Monson had three RBI and Fuzzy Fazekas two. Barry Bates and Tom Whitlock had three hits apiece with Bates driving in five runs and Whitlock two.

Crazy Flamingo’s, 9, Islander Restaurant, 6

Dick DeAnna delivered the key blow, breaking a 6-6 tie. DeAnna, Ron Burger, Nick Brooks, and Tom Paterson had two hits each, with Brooks lacing a triple. Islander had two big home runs from Darryl Judson, a three-run homer and Fuzzy Fazekas, a two-run shot.

Joey’s Pizza, 17, ADKOS, 15

The Pizza boys had to hold off a late-game rally by ADKOS. Ed Hamill had four RBI, three coming on a three-run homer; with Doug Patton, Jack Stevenson, Leroy Fishleigh and Lee Dilk each driving in two runs. Fred Kramer and Fred Carlson had three hits each for Joey’s. Bernie Berman drove in three runs; with Pete Baker, Don Schwartz, and Fuzzy Fazekas driving in two each for ADKOS. John Ranieri had three hits and made numerous defensive plays around the mound, as did Schwartz in left field. Steve Roberts and Fazekas had triples.

CJ’s on the Bay, 6, ADKOS, 5

The first playoff game of the season was a nail biter, with CJ’s having to come from behind to tie the game on a key hit by George Zwerver. Ed Hamill drove in the winning running in extra innings. Tom Whitlock and Ed Hamill each had two RBI for CJ’s, with Mike Gardner hammering a triple. Doug Smith, Pat Coraggio, George Dempsey and Chet Dal Bianco all had two hits and a RBI for ADKOS.

Islander Restaurant, 9, Crazy Flamingo’s, 8

Islander Restaurant had a 5-3 edge going into the six inning only to see Flamingo’s score five runs in the top of the sixth, making the score 8-5. Three of the runs came on Dick DeAnna’s bases-load triple. Islander responded by scoring two runs on a Jim Dorey home run. Islander tied the game on a home run by winning pitcher Butch Monson who had three RBI. The winning run scored on an overthrow at first base. Paul Burnett had three hits for Flamingo’s.

Nacho Mama’s, 16-6, Sand Bar and Sunset Grille, 15-7, Bertram Orthopedics, 10-12, The Pub, 9-13 and Rookies, 1-21.

Marco division standings

Joey’s Pizza, 20-1, Marco Community Bank, 12-9, Islander Restaurant, 11-11, CJ’s on the Bay, 10-12, ADKOS, 9-12 and Crazy Flamingo’s, 2-19.
