— A 15-year-old student with a gun was taken into custody today at Fort Myers High School.

In a written statement, Fort Myers Police spokeswoman Shelly Flynn said that at around 11:30 a.m. the police department received information about a student with a gun at the high school’s campus.

Flynn said two students reported the information to the assistant principal.

Fort Myers Police Officer Athena Mitchell, the school’s resource officer, and school security immediately responded to the suspect’s class and detained the 15-year-old boy, the statement said.

When the school’s administration searched the student’s belongings, reports said a handgun was located in his duffle bag.

Officer Mitchell secured the firearm and the student was transported to Vista Behavioral Crisis Services.

An investigation is underway and charges are pending in the case, Flynn wrote.
