Editorial: Project Graduation ... let’s continue tradition of safe, fun celebration

A trusted friend of young people marks its 25th anniversary.

When Project Graduation welcomes members of the class of 2010 from Collier public and private high schools to the YMCA in North Naples on June 4-5, the community can celebrate quite a milestone.

Students, parents, YMCA staff, volunteers and donors of food, prizes and money have carried out a labor of love since 1985. They have provided grads a safe place to party all night long.

It is the place to be on graduation night — into the wee hours of the next morning.

Now it is time for the Y and the class of 2010 to ask the community to once again be generous.

For more information on Project Graduation, call the YMCA at (239) 597-3148 or go online to www.ymcapalms.org. Financial contributions can be made on the website or by mailing the Greater Naples YMCA, 5450 YMCA Road, Naples, 34109.

It would be especially appropriate for alumni of Project Graduation — 1,000 students per year would come to a potential donor pool of 25,000, right? — to chip in a couple of bucks. That way the YMCA would recoup its $80,000 investment — for which it is still $30,000 short this year — in a flash.

Yet, with all those alums spread far across the country and the world by now, that is easier said than done. The public’s gifts will be much appreciated as part of tradition and an awesome send-off for the future.
