On June 8, the Board of Collier County Commissioners will hear a presentation by the County Parks & Recreation Department concerning the future of Eagle Lakes Community Park and a proposed Community Center.
As you may recall, East Naples residents were very successful several years ago in gaining approval of a project to build Manatee Park off of Manatee Road. The project, as approved, was to build a passive park, which would include walking paths, picnic areas, dog park, children’s areas, etc. The project was approved to go forward with initial design and permitting. The design also included a future Community Center.
Time has gone by and the impact fees collected from new construction have declined to a point where the construction of Manatee Park is possibly five or ten years away. Currently, the Parks and Recreation Department has approximately $2 million dollars earmarked for Manatee Park.
Two months ago, the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board passed a motion to direct Parks and Recreation to bring a proposal to the BCC to re-direct the $2 million dollars allocated to Manatee Park towards building a long needed Community Center in Eagle Lakes Community Park. The Center would include a fitness center, meeting rooms and a swimming pool. These facilities could be constructed with the monies set aside for Manatee Park and the residents would benefit from the Community Center years before Manatee Park could ever be constructed, given the decline in impact fees. As it presently stands, Eagle Lakes is the ONLY community park in the county without a community center. The community centers are used for after school programs, summer programs, summer feeding programs, etc., and this park, nestled in the heart of East Naples where most of the underprivileged children reside, cannot serve this population for lack of a community center.
We need your support at the Board of County Commissioners meeting on May 25th to convince the Commissioners to approve the transfer of funds. Other options will be put before the Commissioners, which would effectively take the funds away from both Manatee Park and Eagle Lakes Community Center, which would deprive East Naples of our just rights in bringing Eagle Lakes up to the standard of all other Community parks in Collier County.
Please come to the BCC meeting on May 25th and register to speak in support. (Thanks to Phil Brougham for all his help on this article and for serving on our parks advisory board!)
We’ve all been waiting to hear when the FP&L Greenway was to begin construction. Bids for the project are due on May 25th and County staff anticipates construction to begin in July 2010 with an estimated completion time in November 2010. The FP&L Greenway will be a 12-foot wide asphalt pathway extending from north of Rattlesnake Hammock Rd. to Radio Rd. Lockable/removable bollards will be placed at the ends of the pathway at Davis Blvd. and Radio Rd. to keep vehicular traffic off the pathway. The pathway will not have any landscaping along the length of it as this time and will not be lighted at night.
East Naples Community Park Soccer Field will hold their grand opening on Friday, May 21st at 6pm and will be open to the public. This soccer field is an exciting new addition to this park so please come out and join the celebration.
The Collier Boulevard Boating Park will hold their grand opening on Saturday, May 22nd at 10am. The community is encouraged to come and see the expansion.
