11135 Gulf Shore Drive North, Naples, FL
NAPLES — A 73-year-old Golden Gate Estates man died Friday afternoon while swimming at Delnor Wiggins Pass State Park.
Berardo Barbaro-Ortega had been spending the day with a church group when he wandered away from the group and went for a swim on his own, according to Collier County sheriff’s spokeswoman Michelle Batten.
“He was gone for about 10 minutes, before they noticed that he wasn’t there,” said Batten. “Then some beachgoers noticed his body had washed up on shore.”
Batten said the investigation had found nothing suspicious. Family declined to comment but witnesses said family reported he was strong and loved to swim along the coast.
Matt and Nicole Dietrick, of Naples, were floating on rafts when they noticed a girl trying to pull the man from the water.
Nicole Dietrick called 911 at 5:36 p.m. as Matt Dietrick began CPR. Another man also tried to revive the victim.
“I just don’t think we got to him in time,” Matt Dietrick said.
By about 5:50 p.m. it was clear the man had died and firefighters carried him off the beach. The grieving family walked slowly down the beach accompanied by a park ranger, back to where their day had started.
