Honoring veterans in Bonita
Annual service held at Riverside Park
Veterans Day events Thursday in Collier and Lee counties:
■ Veterans can eat a free breakfast from 6 to 11 a.m. at the Clock Family Restaurant, 670 Ninth Street N. Veterans are asked to bring identification to show their status to be eligible for the offer.
■ Veterans can receive a free 8-ounce cup of coffee at Bad Ass Coffee, 1027 Third Street S. Veterans need to show a military ID to receive the offer.
■ All Southwest Florida Applebees restaurants will offer free meals to veterans and active duty military Thursday. Veterans and active duty military need to provide proof of service to be eligible. The offer is for dine-in only.
■ Veterans can receive a free haircut today at Mel's Barbershop in Bonita Springs, 8951 Bonita Beach Road SE #235. Hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Veterans are asked to show some form of identification. "We've seen everything--from medals to ID's to dog tags--you name it," owner Maria Strawder said.
■ The Naples Zoo, 1590 Goodlette-Frank Road, is offering free admission for all veterans and active military members through Saturday. Military personnel will receive free admission to Naples Zoo by presenting current military identification or a membership card in a veteran’s organization and matching name photo ID.
■ A Mass will be held in honor of veterans at 10 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist, 625 111th Ave N. The Marine Corps League of Naples will render a rifle salute, and special recognition will be paid to members of “the greatest generation.” Refreshments will be served in the parish life center following the service.
■ A ceremony honoring veterans will take place at 10 a.m. at the veterans memorial at Cambier Park in Naples. The annual event is hosted by the Collier County Veterans Council.
■ A ceremony honoring veterans begins at 11 a.m. at Riverside Park in Bonita Springs. The annual event is sponsored by the Bonita Springs American Legion Post 303, the American Legion Post 3788 and the Bonita Springs Veterans of Foreign Wars.
■ The Naples Depot Museum, 1051 Fifth Ave. S., will host its annual USO show. The show begins at 11:45 a.m., immediately following the memorial service at Cambier Park.
■ U.S. Rep. Connie Mack will honor Southwest Florida veterans at two events in Naples and Fort Myers.
At 3 p.m., Mack will visit the Naples VFW Memorial Post No. 7369, 2405 Linwood Ave., meet with members, and present them with a U.S. flag flown over the U.S. Capitol.
At 5 p.m., Mack will attend the Veterans Day ceremony at Hodges University, 4501 Colonial Blvd., Fort Myers. Mack will present the university with a U.S. flag flown over the U.S. Capitol and give brief remarks.
