LEE COUNTY — A 63-year-old South Fort Myers man who deputies say was caught on video “keying” his neighbor’s car at a Walmart store parking lot was arrested Thursday.
Ronald E. Janus, of the 8500 block of Southwind Bay Circle, faces one count of criminal mischief causing more than $1,000 in damage. He posted $1,500 bond and was released from Lee County Jail.
According to a Lee County Sheriff’s Office report:
James L. Anderle, 73, told Lee deputies his neighbor had threatened to damage Anderle’s property in the past and may have done so, but Anderle couldn’t prove it.
At 10:45 a.m. Sept. 17, Anderle noticed Janus driving behind him near Gladiolus Road and U.S. 41 South. Anderle continued to the WalMart at the corner, went inside and at 12:15 p.m. saw his 2006 Nissan Armada had been “keyed” on the front and rear passenger doors.
Deputies arrived and watched video surveillance showing a man with white or gray hair and in a green shirt get out of a Toyota or Honda minivan, walk toward Anderle’s car, toward the store entrance and back to Anderle’s car. He walks next to Anderle’s car, goes to his van and leaves.
Anderle described Janus and his van, which matched the video tape. Anderle told deputies the damage was $1,374.61.
On Sept. 23 a detective spoke to Janus who admitted he wore a green shirt and black pants on Sept. 17 and he was at Wal-mart the same day. He denied causing Anderle’s car damage.
It was not clear why Janus wasn’t arrested until Thursday.
