New math. Those of us who were around in the 1960’s recall hearing about it or maybe even learning it. Basically, it was the way math was being taught in some of our schools back then. By the end of the ‘60s decade, for the most part, what was called “New math” back then fell by the wayside and was no longer taught in most school districts. End of story.
Let’s fast forward to today though, to focus on a new math program that’s in place now in grades kindergarten through 5 in Collier County schools. And if you are the parent of an elementary school student, you’ll certainly want to learn more about what’s happening with math instruction in our schools today.
We’ve made it pretty easy for you to find out what it’s all about. All you’ll need to do is watch a half-hour television show, “Parent Connection,” on the Education Channel, Comcast cable 99, at 6:30 each evening, Monday through Saturday, now through Oct. 23, and at 10:30 on Sunday mornings the next couple of weeks.
Teacher Lisa Young of Mike Davis Elementary School, and Amber Nottidge, the district’s elementary math coordinator, appear on the “Parent Connection” TV show to talk in-depth about the new math program. Interesting stuff. You may also watch online at www.collierschools.com. And again, to make it as easy as we possibly can, we’ve posted a link to the TV show (what we call a “Webisode” in Internet lingo) in the “What’s New?” area at the top of our website home page.
Veterans Day is just around the corner, and as you might expect, Veterans Memorial Elementary School celebrates the special day in a big way each year. This year, the school will be dedicating a veterans memorial that’s being built right in front of the North Livingston Road school. It’s an Eagle Scout project of Jason Jones, a Naples High School student. He raised the money needed, and did all the work with the help of his fellow Boy Scouts in Troop 165. The dedication is planned for 9 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 10. Community members, veterans especially, are being invited by Veterans Memorial Elementary Principal Tim Ferguson to join students and parents for the special dedication. Look for more info about it as the date draws near.
Many of our schools traditionally schedule special Veterans Day activities. Our office always puts a list together of such activities, and we do the same thing for Red Ribbon Week which is approaching as well. Anything of this nature is always posted on our website with a link normally found in the “Looking For?” box at the top of the home page.
