PHOTOS: Authorities investigating cause of North Naples house fire

— Daniel Groom had just returned from football practice Saturday and was chatting with housekeeper Rita Coleman when they began searching for the source of smoke in the North Naples house.

“We were in the kitchen talking, and the smoke alarm went off and I know in the kitchen there was no fire, and Daniel went and looked in a bedroom of their home, and saw the smoke,” Coleman said while Daniel hugged her.

Groom, who plays football at The Community School of Naples, then called 911 shortly before noon. Firefighters arrived at the home, 9095 The Lane, and had the fire - which firefighters said was confined to the east side of the home - extinguished about an hour later.

A neighbor, Nena Korunda, was outside in the backyard with her family when they noticed smoke.

“I thought that there’s a campfire or something, then we saw even more (smoke) pouring out and everything was gray,” said Isabella Korunda, the woman’s 8-year-old daughter.

“(Then) we went out and saw fire trucks and police cars.”

Neighbors in the Quail Woods community were outside watching the scene that looked like it had come out of a movie.

Daniel’s parents were not home at the time of the fire.

Joe Hessling, the North Naples Fire Control and Rescue District deputy chief, said the fire was out by 12:50 p.m. and that nobody was injured. Investigators late Saturday were still trying to determine the cause.
