NAPLES — Naples detectives are trying to track down a thief who they believe broke into a hotel’s ATM and made off with more than $5,000.
An account executive for Southern Commercial Services, the ATM distributor, told authorities that he may have not locked the machine properly when he last serviced it in early September.
On Monday, Bob Withrow, the account executive, was contacted by staff from the Hilton of Naples, 5111 U.S. 41 N., because there was something wrong with the hotel’s ATM, according to an incident report. When he arrived at the hotel, he found that someone had removed the ATM’s steel cash box, which contained $5,080, all in $20 bills. The machine’s wood frame had been moved and its phone line was not plugged in.
When Withrow checked the machine, he discovered that the combination lock was not activated properly, causing the locking mechanism to remain open, the report said. He said he may not have activated the locking mechanism properly when he last stocked the machine with $8,000 on Sept. 2.
Withrow said he believes the cash box was stolen between 3:19 p.m. and 3:49 p.m. on Sunday. The ATM was out of view of the hotel’s front desk, and reports say there is no surveillance video of the theft.
