NAPLES — About 40 people - including Naples Daily Senior Managing Editor Eric Strachan, Community Editor Jay Schlichter and popular "In the Know" columnist Tim Aten - sipped coffee from Nordstrom's ebar and mingled with a dozen staff members at Coffee & Community #14, held at Nordstrom at Waterside Shops Wednesday evening.
The event, the latest in a monthly series of meet-and-greets sponsored by the Naples Daily News, seeks to teach community members how to get their stories, photos, videos and more into the paper. Attendees also get to meet staff members, ask questions about the newspaper and learn the best way to engage with journalists on a one-to-one basis.
Every attendee at a Coffee & Community event leaves with a set of instructions on sending materials to the Community section, uploading stories, photos and videos to the Participate section of naplesnews.com and contact information for a half-dozen staff members who sort, edit and publish content from community members each day. Attendees frequently become contributors - and see their work in the pages of the Naples Daily News.
Previous events have been held around Naples - at indie java joint Jojoka Coffee, the former NONA art gallery and Starbucks Coffee on Central Avenue. Three summer events at Sunburst Cafe drew packed crowds in June, July and August to sample exotic coffees with names like "Snickerdoodle" and "Jamaican Me Crazy" and nibble decadent Nutella muffins.
Next month, Coffee & Community moves to a slightly earlier time 5:30-7 p.m., again at Nordstrom's E-Bar at 5489 Tamiami Trail North inside Nordstrom at the Waterside Shops at the corner of Pine Ridge Road and U.S. 41 in North Naples. Join us for coffee, community and conversation at next month's event, on Wednesday, October 20, 2010, from 5:30-7 p.m.
