The night belonged to the underdogs! In the semifinal games of the City Men’s Softball tournament two underdogs prevailed.
In the first game No. 3 seed Joey’s defeated No. 2 seed DaVinci’s, 14-7. Mike Buis led Joey’s with four hits and Jimmy Stephenson added a home run. Once again Captain Santo Gentile slammed a home run that gave Joey’s the runs they needed to move on to the championship game.
Mike Radlovacki and Mark Feola Jr. led DaVinci’s with four hits each. The second game, a rematch of last year’s championship game, was spectacular.
No. 4 seed Sand Bar-Integrity Insurance held off the regular season champs Cocomo’s in the highest scoring game anyone can remember, 32-26.
In just two innings, Sand Bar jumped out to a 16-run lead on 13 hits, with home runs by Bobby Natale (5 for 6) and Paul Thomassen (4 for 6).
However, Cocomo’s smacked its way back with 11 hits of its own to make it 16-14. In the fourth inning, home runs by Jason Berning (6 for 6) and Pat Mcguire (4 for 6), opened up Sand Bar’s lead to 24-17. Cocomo’s answered with three runs to make it 24-17.
Sand Bar, on hits from Derrick Rodriguez (5 for 6), Justin Hanna and Brian Kocak (5 for 6), moved to a 31-21 lead. Cocomo’s scored five in the sixth inning, with Neal Alberry ( 5 for 6) and Niels Stone ( 4 for 6) leading the way, but went down quietly in their last at-bats.
The tournament championship game between Joey’s and Sand Bar-Integrity Insurance will be at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday at the Winterberry Park field.
