MARCO ISLAND — Marco City Council members gave the final go-ahead for plans to build a memorial to honor military personnel at Veterans Memorial Park.
At Monday’s regularly scheduled meeting, councilors awarded Allied Paver Systems of Marco Island a contract for $158,395.93 to install memorial pavers. The installation process is the first phase of construction at the 7.5 acre park.
A consulting firm originally estimated that the project would cost $122,000. However, members of a citizen design committee which included local veterans decided on a different type of paver; and made changes to medallion castings, the granite material to be used, layout and installation, resulting in the increased cost.
The city’s contribution of $60,000 for the project remains unchanged. The additional cost will be made up through community fundraising, which has already garnered nearly $100,000. As many as 50,000 memorial pavers will be sold, which is estimated to raise $300,000 to fund the rest of the project and assist in upkeep.
Groundbreaking for the Veterans Memorial is scheduled for 11 a.m., May 2.

To marco Island Woman: If it were not for American Heros, you children would be speaking another language! Thank God for all the men and women who sactrificed their lives so we could be a free nation. Rest in Peace and thank you for your heroic services. You should always be remembered for what you did and sacrificed for your fellow countrymen.

Marco Island Woman "AKA Klabberyapper"'s children DO speak another language...German.
Of course He(she) speaks this way of our USA veterans, He(she) is not from the USA and will never understand the pride Americans feel for our veterans and service people.
