This week we’re sharing what I like to call a little bit of this and a little bit of that:
• Six of our outstanding teachers will literally be in the spotlight, on stage at the Phil, during the Education Foundation of Collier County’s 21st Annual Golden Apple Teacher Recognition Celebration at 7 p.m. Tuesday (May 3rd).
The six receiving Golden Apples are: Michelle Barreiro of Corkscrew Elementary School, Sean Brosig of North Naples Middle School, Lisa Garby of Manatee Middle School, Jaime Hernandez of Immokalee Technical Center, John Rosbottom of Golden Gate Middle School, and Kimberly Sweat of New Beginnings-Naples.
They are being honored and thanked by Suncoast Schools Federal Credit Union (presenting sponsor of Golden Apple) and by the major sponsors of the Education Foundation for excellence in the classroom. If you can’t be at the Phil in person, we’ll have the live Golden Apple Awards telecast for you beginning at 7 p.m. on Tuesday on the Education Channel, Comcast cable 99, and online on the World Wide Web at www.collierschools.com.
And word to the wise, you’ll want to be sure to have a tissue or hankie handy as you watch the awards show. The evening is normally an emotional one. If you want to get to know the six award recipients prior to the big night, they are special guests on the District Digest television program, on cable 99 at 6 p.m. tonight and Monday, May 1, and at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 2.
• What is “Love and Logic” for parents? Find out about this special approach to raising children simply by watching Parent Connection on TV at 6:30 each evening, Monday through Friday on the Education Channel. Special skills are shared to help you learn how to neutralize arguing, how to delay consequences, provide empathetic responses, and guide kids to solve their own problems.
• Do we have a drug problem here in Collier County? What’s our most popular drug? Who is abusing it? Surprising and sometimes shocking statistics regarding drug use, factual information, and powerful real-life stories about substance abuse cases, as well as great tips for parents, grandparents, and everyone, are shared with us by Bob Stutman, one of the nation’s top experts on drugs.
His frank presentation to those gathered for the recent Drug Free Collier Community Awareness Luncheon was captured by the Education Channel’s TV cameras. Watch at 10 p.m. this Saturday and Sunday (April 30th and May 1st) and at 10 p.m. next Saturday, May 7th.
