TAMARAC, Fla. (AP) — Officials say a tornado that damaged several homes in South Florida had top winds of 90 mph.
The tornado touched down Tuesday evening in Fort Lauderdale's western suburbs.
Dan Gregoria of the National Weather Service says the tornado left a mile-long path of roofing and tree damage across parts of Tamarac and North Lauderdale. No injuries were reported, though the roof partially peeled off one home and frame windows were blown out from a couple others.
Gregoria says it's unusual for tornadoes to develop this time of year in South Florida. Forecasters say the tornado developed from air flowing down from two thunderstorms colliding.
Gregoria says the tornado rated an EF1 on the scale that determines tornado strength. The strongest tornadoes are rated EF5.
